Hey Stinga

No, unfortunately, I sold this car in the late 1980s, wish I did still own the car.

Regards Simon

I know I'm digging up an old thread here, i'm just ordering an M22 to go behind a SBC from Midwest Muncie. Jeff seems to know his stuff and be quite genuine and knowlegable as well. Box is the M22Z which is the ultra wide ratio gears (2.98-1st, 2.04-2nd,1.46-3rd, 1:1-4th) to be used with 2.73 to 3.31  diff gears and comes with the Auto Gear super case. $3500 USD includes clutch, bell housing, flywheel to suit SBC plus the shipping. It will work out to just under $5000 delivered since the AU$ isn't doing too bad after Mr Trump took over.

i was going to pick up a Tremec T56 Magnum 6 speed Monday afternoon but the guy sold it from under me earlier that morning. Disappointed was an understatement, but i'm sure the whole set up for the T56 would have set me back 6/7k by the time i purchased all the parts in Australia. Where as the M22 seems to be more affordable and i guess more time period correct too so i'm ordering it and not looking back. Anyone have any information on hydraulic vs cable setup? i have seen CRS make a Hydraulic Clutch conversion kit for UC-LH Torana which does not seem to be priced too poorly.

The car had a 3 speed floor shifter from the original 202 in it & i think i may still have the rat trap and clutch pedal, could this be adapted?

Thanks

What size flywheel? 10.5 or 11"?

If it was me i'd be using a UC 6cyl clutch pedal with modified hook for a bit extra cable travel, and use a UC clutch cable. This won't work with the US bellhousing though, you'd need a Dellow or CRS SBC to Muncie/T10/Saginaw etc. I think I have one of these here that was behind a TH pattern 308 in a Commodore with a Muncie, but it won't work with 11" SBC flywheel IIRC.

I'm a big believer in a quality hydraulic thrust bearing (e.g. Tilton), will completely blow your budget but I never regret it after spending the money. Good feel and no issues with forks etc. The hydraulic slave/fork combination never really works all that well.

YEL327 it is an 11" flywheel. I am still weighing up my options, as I can also get a fully rebuilt Ford Toploader (wide raito) box with a rengate shifter for $3000. I will need a bellhousing ($650 from CRS) to fit Toploader to sbc. The box was meant for an EF sedan, and will come with HD clutch and hydraulic throwout. From what i read i would need to re drill a chev pressure plate to ford pattern and i would be able to use the 11" clutch provided? I'm not sure which setup will be easier, but this set up will save me about $1200 and from what i hear Toploaders are quite strong boxes too...

Any advice? would you take the Toploader or M22?

All you need is the 11 inch Top Loader clutch plate, you have a Chev flywheel and a Chev pressure plate, no mods required. You can not use a Ford pressure plate, without modifying it, would be easier in the long run to just buy a chev pressure plate if that is what you meant?

Yes, Thanks...

Hmm so the issue is that a lot of the parts i am getting for $3000 are not neccisary(Rengate shifter which people are saying may sit too far to the left & the Ford Clutch & Pressure plate where as i only need the clutch disk. I can get a fully rebuilt (David Kee Road Race rebuild kit) Toploader without shifter and clutch for the same price as this standard rebuilt box Or Could buy the M22.

I am not sure which road to go down...

Surely the M-22 you refer to is not the famous Rockcrusher with the straighter cut gears.

That is the only M22 Muncie! The same thing with normal gear meshing is an M21. Theseboth had 2.2:1 1st gear. Chris is talking about an aftermarket version with wider ratio set but with the M22's gear angle.

Yep Correct. Midwest Muncie in Wisconsin make an improved aftermarket M22 which has a stronger casing and other trick bits. Apparently Jeff sends a few box's over here for the Camaro Circuit Cars in Australia. The box still has the famous M22 whine, but apparently it is slightly quieter due to the thicker casing.  The M22 still seems like the better option, although pricier than the Toploader. Either that or a TH350 which is such a more cost effective and easy option!

Have you checked out this site? Prices are a little better, he has his own steel midplate.

Yea i have, the steel mid plate would be nice though. pricing is very similar. For $3500 USD includes clutch, bell housing, flywheel

So i took the plunge (Yel327) I Odered the M22Z from Midwest Muncie this morning, so it is currently being assembled and should be here in just a few weeks!

(76lxhatch) I think i will look into a hydraulic setup, i am doing some research regarding the Tilton Hydraulic thrust bearing.
