How dare you suggest that Torana's were once treated poorly Brad. :)  The exhaust on this XU1 was glowing right to the end of the muffler. It was held flat for minutes.

Update time. Having the shell dipped has turned out to be more work than I thought.

About 14 holes have been drilled in the shell that they never told me they were going to do so these had to be welded up.

Yes that is a hole drilled in the middle of the roof skin.

Holes drilled in the wind screen channel and the top of the dash.

I was surprised at the amount of rust that started to form under panels, I had tack welded the sill panel and two extra roof braces on to the shell and removed them when I got the shell home.

There are also spots where it looks like acid is still leaching out of the seams.

Attached File  A9X_0400_resize.JPG   213.49K   12 downloads

I was also surprised at the amount of body deaden-er and seam sealer that was still in the shell.

The black shape in the middle of the photo is one of the many big chuncks of body deaden-er.

I have had to strip and clean and sand every part of the shell so finally got the inside and underneath painted with KBS.

One coat of silver KBS, still need to seam seal then a coat of black KBS.

Thats disappointing Glen,

your body looks like mine did after they dipped the car the first time, it still looked rusty and crap was coming out of it.

After the second dipping the shell was spotless and there was nothing left in the box sections that I could see through holes.

The box sections were all rust treated as well as the rest of the car, and finally a sealer was applied to everything.

I assume all the holes they drilled were to let air bubbles escape when they submerged the shell in their bath?

That kinda sucks.

You'd think it'd be worth them building a rotating cradle similar to a rotisserie so they didn't have to do that.

I have had to strip and clean and sand every part of the shell ~

That almost seems to defeat the purpose of dipping if you still have to do all that work afterward?

I hate the idea of that rust starting again in all the cavities you can't get to. Sounds like there should be a second stage dipping in some kind of rust prevention treatment?

One thing I would do before you weld up the holes is pump them full of cavity wax (or the like) especially if they are hard to get at areas.  I would have thought there should have been a final process of spraying a rust inhibitor. Cheers Ron

Big stuff Glen. Always a pleasure to get up to date on this.

Can't say it makes me super keen to have a car dipped though. At least you're well qualified to deal with hurdles though, lol.

Put a quick coat of epoxy/prime over the filler to seal it up.

Now need to take it off the rotator and do around the tail lights.

Started fitting the spoiler, the LH side was ok but the RH needs a lot of work.

Almost had to cut the whole side off and re-fibreglass it back on.

Also had to build up both sides of the centre piece.

Now just need to file and square up the gaps.

Get the spoiler nice and neat then take moulds and make a motza selling a product that actually comes close to fitting.

Cheers

Worth the effort, only way to get great gaps, looks good.
