The main difference is that once enough coolant is purged to get the system to operating temperature it shouldn't happen again next time (unless you top it off again), and the air that enters the system as it cools must remain at the highest point and be purged via the radiator cap first at the next warm up (i.e. the air stays in the top radiator tank).

Btw Rad caps have either two or three seals depending on recovery/ non-recovery.

Correct.But you do want the coolant to be purged even without a recovery system. The same allowance for expansion is made, it just doesn't recover the coolant as the temperature is lost.

The air in the top of a non recovery system should not be topped up as you have stated due to expansion.
