hi im just after some advice on which manual trans to put in my torana i have a 383 chev stroker small block , i know the ford toploader 4 speed is up there with the best trans to use but they are way to expensive to buy they sell secondhand up to 1000 bucks then you need bell housing clutch and the list goes on any ideas will be great. the car will just be used for the street no racing just cruising and the engine should be producing between 450 to 500HP thanks

Is $1000 expensive for a strong manual box that will handle 400 to 500 horsepower?

I couldnt imagine you would get anything else suitable for any less than a grand. the only other boxes I'd consider behind an engine like that would be a tremec TKO 5 speed, or a T56 6 speed, and you would be expecting to spend 4-6k to got one in, maybe more.

Even a used T5 can set you back 1k but I wouldnt put that on more than a stock 308/304 without doing any modifications to one to beef it up

I cant imagine one being any cheaper than a toploader still, but yeah another good choice in the 4 speeds

perfect gearbox for you would be opel 4 speed as used in the hk's and lc torana's or even a bullet proof aussie 4 speed...nice and cheap good ratios...

mate get real if you can afford to build a 383 chev...perhaps you can dig a little deeper into your pocket and put a real 4 speed transmission where it belongs..

that's infact if you've got the horsepower your quoting...

if your genuinly serious about what your doing the gearboxes you should be considering are muncie finespline and super t10 which both have 26 spline and 32 rear

and of course the toploader gearbox which you say is to expensive..all these gearboxes i have personally used with great success...don't kidd yourself horsepower
and torque costs money..

Agreed, whats the point of spending 15k building hp if you break stuff easing your foot off the clutch at idle??

That said i agree the 1k or so asking price for a toploader pulled offf some lads junk pile is a bit rich, considering you need to add a rebuild to that etc. If you look around you can get brand new super T-10's from the states for around $1500 plus freight and duties, or a TKO 500-600 is about $2200 from the sttes plus freight and duties. The latter is the way im going behind my 202 when i go to a manual. The perk for you is seeing your running a chev EVERYTHING bar the tailshaft and gearbox x member you can get straight from the states cheap cheap. Budget 5k.

If you cant afford that, put a slushbox in it.

Cheers.

I just dont get why people call Manual GEARBOXES.....Transmissions!....................I always thought that a transmission was an automatic transmission and a gearbox was, well....a GEARBOX!!

No, still a transmission.

Gearbox is aussie slang.

Cheers.

Everyone has basically said it all but just in case it needed reinforcing... re-think your budget to something more realistic like $3K and get a decent Muncie and clutch

Muncie. You'll smash a standard Toploader with a 377/383, unless it has been built right which costs as much as a new Muncie.

get a close ratio toploader, they shift like a muncie and are stronger than a standard ratio T/L

Just cruising...can't beat an auto. Much easier and cheaper in the end.

Muncie or TKO. There is no middle ground.
