i was told Comp Cam's have the steel billet's, i would look into it.
They don't, I checked.
They may grind one for you if you give them a blank though.

Will Tighes sell you a blank, Ned? I assume you want a steel core but don't want to use Tighes profiles on it. Some of the smaller cam designers/producers (eg Mike Jones) can make one-offs from a sample but I don't expect it'd be cheap.
Yes they will sell a blank. & Yes, I am looking at getting lobes ground elsewhere.
No it won't be cheap but relative to how much the whole shebang will cost it is not that bad, and quite possibly money well spent.
Not sure what I will do yet. Nothing will happen very quickly that's for sure. I've got a few roller lifters here now that I can dummy up/play with while I work out what I'll do with the camshaft...and I've got one almost ready to assemble before I get onto that. Must tidy up and get the improvements done to the 'assembly room' also...and...

I think the last billet I bought came from Crow.
Called them yesterday before posting. They haven't done steel billets for a while now.

So what's the go now? Are the majority of new aftermarket Holden 6 red,blue/black cams made from cast cores?
Yes, which is perfectly fine for all hyd / solid flat tappet cams btw.

Holden Six cams fit both 186 and 202, good all rounder

Hi Dave,
I've tried comp again with no luck. Any chance you can give me the their comp cams part number for the holden 186/202 steel billet core? Or, if you can scan and post up your cam card I can work it out from that???
Cheers.

Hi Ned Loh,
I will keep you posted, it has taken 2 months to get the Information I have obtained so far.
The only reason I am pursuing a 'Comp Cam' grind is that I know how good the Engine runs on one. Dave I
p.s. as stated before, 'Comp Cams' have two main suppliers and you will need to find out who they are.

Ok, let me know.
I've reached the point with Comp (twice now) where the tech (different both times) has told me they can't do them. Their published cam cores are here http://www.compcams....haft-cores.aspx but if you can turn up the core number for a steel billet I'll have something to go back to them with.
Hi Vick,
To run solid roller lifters and associated valve train.
Hi Kevin,
Speaking from experience there? Sounds nasty.

Lyn Stewart's gemini has broken 2 cam's behind no 1 with that spring pressure.
I do remember a knowledgeable circuit racer on a here saying cam's life depended on timing gear's used, helical v straight cut.
But he never stated which gear made the cam last longer

not yet quite yet, running 390lb's and 7800rpm solid roller on a cast core no problems for 7 year's (cam is very slow, not my engine or car though).

Hi greens nice,
So the pressure on the cam is two sets of valves/ double valve springs being compressed at the lobe tips almost a the same time which would make each spring close to 100lbs each. ( thats if it were double valve springs )
As for Helical vs Straight cut Timing gears - straight would let the cam rotate nice and the helical would be driving it into the block putting stress there. Dave I

the helical gear will be pulled in toward's the block, and stay there. Assuming you know how to hold the cam gear on.
straight cut's will have no directional pull, so the oil pump and dizzy (maybe if it was a magneto) would be trying to pull/push the camshaft?
broken cam thrust plates are more common with straight cut's from what i've seen.
sorry for my dribble

Hi Kevin, good that it has held up, but you'd have to be into the grey area there. Because I'm tight fisted I'm tempted to give it (solid roller grind on cast core) a go, but I'm sick of making junk so I think I'll go steel billet.

the first one was in for 7 years and then started wearing and pitting on top of the lobes.

Gee ive fallen waay behind the times.😕
Looks like i still might b able to get the
