Hi ChaosWeaver,
Could be several things:-
1 - clutch pressure moves Motor/box assembly as the engine/box mounts are shot.
2 - fan blades are shot.
3 - crank shaft has play.
4 - harmonic balancer is shot.
p.s. get someone to look in there when the other operates the clutch. Dave I

I don't like the sound of any of them....... It has always done it, and it only had around 3000 miles on the motor when i got it..... and the motor has now done about 25,000 miles, and last time it was going, it was absoluley fine... just making a "Ting - Ting - Ting noise .........lol

I very much doubt it is the fan if it stops when you push the clutch in.

Xu-1's ran a notched fan to clear the retaining plate on the balancer.
And it sounds like you have a frOckload of crankshaft end float.
Cheers.

I don't think a genuine XU-1 fan would come anywhere near the pulley due to its smaller than standard diameter. Of course I may very well be wrong.

Waterpump is stuffed?

Could it be the Clutch throw-out bearing

If there was too much crankshaft end float the problem would be worse when the clutch pedal is depressed.
I'd be looking at the water pump as Rodomo has suggested. Remove the fan belt, grab the fan and check if there is excessive wobble in the pump shaft.
Also check the outer pulley on the balancer isn't coming off or that the balancer has been installed fully onto the crank. You should have a good 8 to10mm clearance between the fan blades and the face of the balancer.
DJ, it was only the 150 list 1973 XU1's that got the balancer retainer and the notched fan blades as factory fitment.

Really? There ya go.
Considering i've seen a few of the notched fan blades and one of the balancers with the ring i figured it was a bit more garden variety than that...Cheers for the correction.

Put up some pics of the fan etc from different angles might help to work out what could be wrong.

same fan as the X2 Hr
Are you sure Dave? Last time I saw an X2 engine fan the blades were sort of square ended not rounded like the XU1.
From memory the LC GTR engine fan looks a lot like the X2 fan.

Was for sale and is gone, but it was said to be a HR X2 one but mine was almost square at the tips. Dave I
p.s. change fans to see if there is any difference to the noises

I had a funny little ticking noise in the goon that had me foxxed and it ended up being the spring that locates the metal dustcover
on the clutch fork being dislocated and rubbing on the clutch.

OK thanks guy's , it was that long ago, it could have been the other way around (Fan would just hit when I pushed the ciutch in) I can't really remember, but the motor will be looked at soon, as it's never run unleaded before...... I was looking at a few Torana's at MAD today, and the fans on a couple of them were realy close, but the guy's said they didn't touch... so when I get the motor pulled down and checked I'll post what was found..... once again thanks for the help and advice ....
