Hi,

Was wondering if anyone has done this conversion. Its potentially on the list for the new toy.

Interested to hear how it went with clearance etc and if there were any suprise problems.

Thanks in advance.

They are a big box, particularly around the rear.

At least its round on top though, makes for better tunnel clearance. I can't imagine you will get ideal driveline angles without some trimming to get the shifter section up through the floor but with a bit of luck it should be reasonably minimal.

Sorry, I must digress.

Turbo supra box.

This is VERY misleading DJ; same as people calling a W58 a Turbo Supra box. A R154 was put behind some of the later A70 Supras that had a 7M-GTE, it was never put behind a Turbo JZA80 (2JZ-GTE) which is what anyone on here would associate 'Turbo Supra' with.

R154 is basically the N/A A80 Supra (2JZ-GE) OR all VVT 1J's such as Chaser, Cresta, Crown, Mark II etc.

'Turbo Supra' gearboxes are V-series like V161, and they have an extra gear and a far higher torque rating. They are very expensive and I haven't seen one in a Torana before.

If such a thing ever existed, they may well have had R154's.

Wernt they in the 1jz turbo supras?

Wiki says they were in 7M and 1JZ Turbo Supras, MA70 and JZA70 1986-1993.

I certainly don't want to get into an argument about Japanese cars as your knowledge is far greater than mine in that field, but I was under the impression a jza70supra certainly existed, or was this auto only?

Also I'm reasonably confident the 7m turbo 70 series supras had a r154?

I'm explaining this very poorly.

There were R154's behind non-VVT 1J's as you say in JZA70's (JZZ30 Soarer also). That is correct and I kinda made an oversight. There were Supras that were turbocharged that used this gearbox for a while. But those models are not famous. It wasn't shit until the twin turbo 2JZ A80 model came out (the Fast & the Furious model) and it actually built a huge reputation. That is what everyone refers to as a 'Turbo Supra' and it did have a specifically designed gearbox that was not fit in anything but the 'Turbo Supra'. That's all I was kinda getting at.

R154's are good, and lighter, and way more attainable than the V-series box. I've destroyed a lot of tyres with one and only have positive things to report.

Also I'm reasonably confident the 7m turbo 70 series supras had a r154?

Early was W58 (which is where the other misconception comes from) and then yes, R154 later I think.

Hello Heath,

thought I would check out these 'V' series gearboxes,

and here is the ratio's and you were correct about the price, $8556USD for a new one:-  :furious:

V160 Ratios

First gear: 3.827:1
Second gear: 2.360:1
Third gear: 1.685:1
Fourth gear: 1.312:1
Fifth gear: 1:1
Sixth gear: 0.793:1

V161 Ratios

First gear: 3.724:1
Second gear: 2.246:1
Third gear: 1.541:1
Fourth gear: 1.205:1
Fifth gear: 1:1
Sixth gear: 0.818:1

'Turbo Supra' gearboxes are V-series like V161, and they have an extra gear and a far higher torque rating. They are very expensive and I haven't seen one in a Torana before.

I think in most non jap circles though, w58 is referred to as the 'supra' box and r154 as the 'turbo supra' box (terminology wise)

Which car they came out of is kind of irrelevant to most people

Yeah thats waht I always understood.

The 70 series seems more common in Aus than the 80 series, or atleast around here there were/are a lot more 70's than 80's. '

Interesting to know its a turbo 70 series na 80 series supra box though lol.

The yellow peril?
It's had an interesting life. It had an engineered v8 conversion a very long time ago. Spent some years terrorising melbournes streets before becoming a drag car. Was returned to street car duties for a while until it crossed my path at the right price.
When I got it the setup was warm 308, Aussie 4speed and nine inch. The diff is a really nice piece of work. It's been tubed by splitting the tub and moving the original inwards. It looks factory to the uninitiated, a really nice job. Good fuel system and really nice custom pipes.
Having procrastinated for a while and been distracted by other jobs I have now got around to starting the tart up. My goal is to use stuff out of the shed and buy as little as possible.
So far I have swapped out the 4:11 spooled centre for a 3:5 lsd, swapped in the good spare engine and the R154 box. Lots of little fiddly jobs as well. Only purchases so far apart from consumables are clutch pressure and driven plate together with modified tail shaft.

Looks sweet bud.
How did you go with getting the angle you wanted? Did you have to massage the tunnel much in the end?

Well Grant its in and the tail shaft slotted through close to the centre of the tail shaft safety loop. Time will tell if it's vibration free. Fingers crossed.
I can't tell you how happy I was to crank it over, get oil pressure and then fire it up!

Firewall flex much or is it braced?
