 Hi Guys

Any help would be appreciated, was ready to head out for a spin Friday night to find my headlights not working.

Park lights work

Dash lights work

High beam work

All fuses are good.

I can only think the light switch / knob is cactus! Just thought I would see what people thought before trying to pull it out.

Getting it fixed or a replacement will be the next issue.

Cheers Brock

Hi GTR600,
If..

Park lights work

Dash lights work

High beam work

All fuses are good.

and assuming tail lights work....I'd be checking the dimmer switch...i.e. do the headlights work on hi or low beam, or not at all?

If your high beam works it's not the lighting switch.

I'd be checking the headlights or bulbs if you have halogen lights. If these all check out ok then the most likely culprit is a failed hi/low dipper switch or a dirty or loose wiring connector.

H4 halogen conversions have been around for decades, so I thought I'd mention that just in case.

Attached File  LJ%2520GTR%2520Wiring%2520diagram%20small.JPG   178.93K   10 downloadsLooking at the attached wiring drawing....top left-ish...you can see the dimmer (dipper) switch. The blue wire on the dimmer switch is seen as the 12v supply. The mustard coloured wire is the HIGH BEAM wire, that goes to both headlights and also goes to the HIGH BEAM indicator on your dash.
The tests you can do are -

1
When you turn the lights on, AND operate the dimmer/dipper switch - does the HIGH BEAM light on the dash light up? do the high beam head lights come on?
If so, you have established that the 12v supply to the light switch is good.
Also you have established that the dimmer/dipper switch is OK when in the high beam position.

2 If all the above works, and the headlights just don't work on LOW bEM, then suspect the dimmer/dipper switch. However if the tests in "1" don't work....we need to look further

Yep tail lights are good also. Fronts are sealed as mention. Dash lights are adjusting to a turn of the knob. Brighter / duller.

Not sure exactly as on my own but with the lights on but not working, if i hit the high beam button ( Dimmer switch?? )on the floor they work.... arrrrmm , actually i have to hold the high beam button( Dimmer switch ? ), that must be dickey also, as that's usually a click for on and a click for off!!.

I guess that's the culprit! any one pulled this apart before? or is it a rare spares thing?

Thanks for the reply s.

no probs mate...sounds like your dimmer/dipper has lost it 'click' / mojo and is only closing the 12v supply to the lights when 'held' . Hope a replacement sorts it for you.
If not, you have at least eliminated it from the problem equation.

As for where you get one...don't know...but theres a lot of good people on here who would know.............

Rare Spares don't seem to have any dip switches listed.

Found this new big Holden model dip switch at Kingswood country. It's not listed as being for Torana but I thought they were the same as the ones in the HK/T/G, HQ and HJ's.

If you are anywhere near Kelmscott give Highway Auto's a call, I'm pretty sure they will have them.

If not try Repco, Auto One or maybe even Covs or Mals.

Don't bother with Supercr@p.

I bought one from Rare Spares years ago for about $70 and about 6 months later found them at Repco for about $20.

You should be able to buy a universal foot dip switch from Bursons or Repco that will most likely connect up with out any modification.
