I want to cut open my oil filter to inspect the contents - does anyone have any suggestions of a good way to do this?

I had thought that one of those side opening can openers would do the trick, but it doesn't fit on...

Other than hacking into it with a screw driver & tin snips, is there an easier way?

Or try grinding around the outer edge.

Using a grinder puts metal filings in it....

I have an opener similar to the one Craig linked, just a cheap summit one, difficult to use but it works, i think a better one would be easyer to use but meh.

Cheers.

Or you could just trim the seam completely off with a decent pair of tinsnips.

Do you know anyone who works at a Hastings Deering or similar place, they cut oil filters to check for contaminants, maybe ask if you could borrow theirs for an hour or 2.

I have one of the Summit ones as well, a bit painful but does the job.

because I needed it 'now', I decided to make one....

First attempt failed, as I found I had the cutter too low, and it was up against the solid base..... A few modification to raise the cutter, and it worked a treat!

....PS, for anyone thinking about doing this themselves - if you can wait for delivery, just spend the $60-70 on one of the longacre or summit ones!

Yeah, $2 can opener for the cutting disk.
What I found was lot's of silver glitter.... but that was a foregone conclusion, as I ended up pulling the engine out before I finished the cutter.

Will use it every service now to keep an eye on things...
