Lovin the Hatch Heath, we built a fully optioned UC Hatch for Sams first car, lowered with showwheel streeters ,4w discs, painted in nissan skyline metallic blue, we dulled the tail lights with black across the back panel and vertical black in the lenses, hot 192 with a big wade cam and converted the trimatic to aussie 4 spd with a hd clutch plate and one tonner pressure plate, a great sporty little Torana to drive, a real headturner and with the hot six sounds and performs great. So to the old and very tired (shame its a UC grind on and on brigade, go and jump!!!)The cable clutch conversion was just VB commodore bell housing and cable and I found a UC clutch and brake pedal in Sydney, or use the lx pedal and modify the end, any way I will see you out and about

So why doesn't the blue/black flywheel fit? Dimensions are the same as a red, except less material in the back similar to what you have machined out.

I think the problem is the bigger clutch.

So the pressure plate may not fit, but the flywheel will. Another option was to re-drill a blue/black flywheel to suit a red size pressure plate.

Indeed Warren, that was another option, but it seemed this was the most straight-forward way to go. As I said, not a setup I'm going to keep forever, and it was fun spinning it up on the lathe anyway. A lightened steel YT one would be my preference if it was going to be a permanent solution.

Grant, you aren't getting it out of me that easily!

Welded an exhaust bung in the collector so that I can tune it properly when it's back together.

2013-10-26125811.jpg

Made up another engine mount to replace the original ones. Just uses some old swaybar & shock bushes I had lying around

2013-10-26155645.jpg

2013-10-26181651.jpg

Got my closed & honed rods back from the engine builder, with the balanced and linished crankshaft that I cut up with an angle grinder, and starting putting bits and pieces together.

2013-10-24200711.jpg

2013-10-24185152.jpg

2013-10-24204428.jpg

So now it is set up with .001" up bearings after the 'heavy linish' on the mains and the big ends, plastigauge'd it up with consistent .002" clearance on both, also did the rope-to-neoprene conversion on the rear main.

2013-10-25001440.jpg

Head also copped a new set of single valve springs to suit my new cam, although that's even less exciting to post photos of.

Still got a bit to go, but working through it.

Fix the head up mate. I know its only temporary but you've put this much work into the bottom end, you might as well put a half decent head on it. Just porting and shaving a blue/black head along with a reco wouldn't cost that much.

JB would be dissapointed if you don't do the head.

The head was already 'done' to some degree before I bought the car, got receipts etc but the valve guides had some play, if I'm not happy with the performance, I might put one of my other heads on, but I'm not gonna rush to spend more money on this head before I know what it's like with some cam timing.

So in other words the head you've got is no good. C'mon mate I've heard you go on about all this engine theory bs for years. Just build a sick head.

Cheers for the offer Matt, but I actually have a few heads that have various bits of work done, which I can put on if I'm unsatisfied with the performance, or if the valve guides give me greif.

Had to remove the spigot bush from the old crankshaft, made up a little puller tool to do that

2013-10-28182617.jpg

Took the edges off the lobes of the camshaft with a file and pressed on the steel Rollmaster straight cut timing gear. This is a Clive Cam's #233 with 222deg @.050", 110deg LSA,

2013-10-28193404.jpg

Checked the volume of the combustion chambers, 46.5cc and about 7cc in the slugs, all equates to about 9.3:1 which is lower than I would have opted for but I can pull the head off and change it later if need be.

2013-10-29223221.jpg

Cut a bit of shim material to shape and punched a 6mm hole to restrict both of the rear transfer ports

2013-10-29230303.jpg

2013-10-29230611.jpg

Checked the timing on the cam and pressed the crank gear on

2013-10-29232131.jpg

2013-10-29232121.jpg

Put it back in earlier this week

2013-11-05141306.jpg

Linished the shit out of the KC alloy gear to get rid of all the casting imperfections

2013-10-20160124.jpg

Cut some slots into the rocker cover and made up some sheet ally baffles

2013-11-08184537.jpg

Looks good after a polish of the fins

2013-11-08190602.jpg

All together again.

2013-11-08204106.jpg

Dizzy is a rebuilt GM HEI one that has been recurved for the cam

It's still on the Running-In oil and filter, I did the cam run-in procedure, took it for a few blockies and brought it home last night. Running like a bag of shit at the moment until it gets on cam but I haven't opened the taps properly yet, I'm going to have a crack at giving it a tune-up this arvo with a mate's help.

Sounds mint. Well I had some decent progress today with the tuning - eliminated some of the emissions gear hanging off the carbureter that wasn't really functioning and was adding up to some small vacuum leaks, adjusted the timing and idle settings a bit, put the 'Innovate' wide-band oxy sensor and did about 20min of driving around at different speeds and loads, including some good pulls up the onramps on the Sth Eastern. The tune is definitely not perfect but feels a lot better already - still getting accustomed to getting it off the line well with the big cam.

The motor pulls strong when it's on song, the timing gear is awesome - completely obnoxious, but it's clear that the loose valve guides are resulting in some oil consumption. No worse than it was. Might have to set up another head and squease some more compression out of it while I'm at it - but I want to build my Datsun motor in the meantime.

Well since the last post, the head has come off and had a freshen up, port work was already done before I got my hands on it, new collets and retainers and the (single) springs I put on to match the cam. Also had the head skimmed about 1mm so I've got a Static C.R. of around 10:1.

Port matched the extractors and gave them another lick of paint while they were out too.

Racked up a fair few k's. Rear main seal has taken up to some extent but still has a weep. Goes better in the mid range but I think it would benefit from a four barrel. That's probably next

Also picked up some Rare Spares GTS Mirrors from LXCHEV, still in the boxes. Sanded and polished out the part line from the moulding and bolted them onto the car. Much better, hated those tacky chrome things.

Wouldn't have minded those myself Heath. Those mirrors are a big improvement, those old ones look like there for a hotrod or something.

Yeah they were pretty bad, and they were crap to see through not that that really matters when they are so ugly anyway.

Been working on getting a 4-barrel to fit this thing. Bought a CAIN 4bbl manifold from Brad1979UC and LX2DR supplied me some scrap 20mm ally plate, fantastic. Got to work on a 90deg turned adapter, cut it out with a jigsaw and then started holesawing each barrel. Took a little while!
2014-01-18181003.jpg
20mm was a bit thick for bonnet clearance so I milled it down to about 13mm to be safer.
2014-01-19132250.jpg

Filed out some slots and drilled a hole in the base of the plenum to locate a 3mm ally wall that I made up to prevent the reflex you get with a manifold & cam combo like this.
2014-01-30194348.jpg
2014-01-30194334.jpg
Finished off the adapter and countersunk some stainless bolts into it to sit flush under the squarebore throttlebody.
2014-01-30194210.jpg
Squarebore (500?) throttlebody and Impco 425 I picked up for $100 off Gumtree.

Sweet.

I've got a similar manifold and Quadrajet on my otherwise bog standard 202 ute. Never thought about turning it sideways, just made up a dodgy throttle cable extension that runs around the corner thanks to a suitably shaped length of bundy... goes great

How's the rear main seal going Heath? assuming its the neoprene crank/rope block jobby? I never had much luck with them. Got a part number?
