G'day All

Just trying to find a few facts on Brock's 79 win

What was his top speed down Conrod ?

Actual HP of the car at how many RPM ?

What were the tyre sizes  ?

Front 15” X 10” Rear 15” X 10 ?

Tried a few sites but not all of the info is available

Thanks .... Barry

G'day All

Just trying to find a few facts on Brock's 79 win

What was his top speed down Conrod ? Pretty sure it was 273Km/h

Actual HP of the car at how many RPM ? Just on or slightly under 400HP, not sure of the exact figure or at what revs but anything over 7500 is not healthy for a 308. Watch the qualifying lap you can see that.

What were the tyre sizes  ?

Front 15” X 10” Rear 15” X 10 ? Maybe try asking Chris or Dan Bowden. The HDT had Bridgestones which were very different in size and profile to all the other teams and varied track to track as they would test at each track prior to every meeting during the 79 season. The rims were 15x10 front and rear

Thanks Red

That speed down Conrod is not bad considering the SuperV8's are doing about 300 with all the mod engine/suspension/aerodynamics.

Wasn't quite sure about the revs for that HP and I thought 6500 wouldn't of been too bad for V8's of that era but 7500 is fairly screaming

Goddamn they sound sweet on the track

278 KMH  I think that the HDT A9X Hatch hit in 1979, but Red would know for sure

In 1993 Larry Perkins hit 291 kmh at 7500 rpm in the Last of the 308 V8's

Thats bloody impressive. I hate that video on youtube where they 'compare' the HDT A9X hatch with a V8 supercar and I think a VZ SS around Bathurst. The V8 supercar flies past the Torana down conrod like its not even moving when I think it should in fact just about give the V8 supercar a run for its money.

According to an interview with Neil Burns (who built Brocky's 1979 Bathurst engine) in an article in July 2006 Street Machine about the A9X motors, the HDT ones had just on 400 HP and around 380 ft lb of torque.

Brock reckons Sheppard was very strict about not revving them beyond 6800 RPM. He 'would beat you to death' if you did according to Burns.

Can't see any info on the top speed though sorry.

I think I have an article about the car in an old AMC so I'll dig that out tomorrow if I remember.

well i thought the fastest any of the Toranas in '79 including Brocks was 260 kph's down conrod..mmm i have some videos including highlights of the '78 and '79 races where im sure they talk about the speeds down conrod straight so will dig em out and watch em again

and might be a little off thread but here are 4 things that Brock/Richards achieved in '79 that probably will never happen again

1-Brock reset the lap record on the last lap of the race(we all know that one)

2-he was never headed even when in the pits (tyres and fuel) he led the race from start to finnish!

3-he won by a massive 6 laps!

4-when he crossed the finnish line another 7 Torries followed him home before the first Fraud..talk about a crushing victory for Holden!

Yeah but they say in the video that it was only running a 3.55 or 3.36 diff ratio don't they, and acknowledge that it wasn't the correct Bathurst ratio... ?

The A9X in that instance had a 3.55 diff instead of the 3.08 they ran in 79, it simply ran out of legs.

It might of been 268 kph and not 278 kph

I'm sure it was on the TV on race day in 1979, they said about the top speed by Brocky,  268 or 278 kph, such a long time ago to remember

Not much point asking the drivers, the race cars had tachos, not speedos.

Hi All,

The Conrod Straight was Straight then and the A9x would not have taken the New corner there as it has that High Speed Dip to it.

But what do you think of where the A9x made it's Speed down the Straight? Dave I

p.s. remember the over shoots at the Finish corner

I think back then the great race organisers or Chanel 7 used a Speed Gun at the end of Conrod Straight

This 1979 Brocky A9x Lap could clear some things up:-

Ok so I dug up that old AMC (Issue No. 2) with an interview with Brocky about the car but there are no exact numbers as I had hoped.

Brocky himself apparently says "160 - 165 mph (down Conrod), which is about 265 - 270 km/h, or something like that".

He also says "I was driving for the Holden dealer, Bill Paterson, at the time and in the body shop at his dealership we actually built all the A9Xs for the factory... so I was involved in some of the body modifications and the fitting of the (wheel) flares and a whole lot of little things that had to be done to the cars when they arrived there."

He also says "Yeah, that (A9X diff) was out of the Holden One Tonner with Commodore discs adapted to it."

Sorry for any confusion, the first quote refers to the 1979 race. The second was a question regarding the A9X development process. And the third is just a general question.

Don't put much faith in what Peter said, he told everyone the car Peter Champion has is the 05 VK too. He was telling everyone after the speed comparison test if he had the 2.60 diff that we ran at Bathurst he would have won, but the fact was they didn't use the 2.60 diff at Bathurst.

Don't put much faith in what Peter said...

Bit harsh, especially since the guy ain't here to defend himself.

You got to remember too that ANYONE can be miss quoted or misinterpreted.

I personally have more faith in someone who was hands on over someone collecting magazines and reviewing interviews from BITD.
