In 78 Wheels mag did an article on the King George Tavern A9X driven by Gibson. Although they used Dunlops whereas 05 used the taller wider Bridgestones it gives you a clear answer to the speed with the 3.08 gearing. Nobody used more than 6500rpm down Conrod in the race as it was hard enough (in the era) getting the plastic motor to last a sprint race let alone Bathurst. The old plastic during this period was a very marginal race motor and it would hand grenade at the drop of a hat let alone exceeding 6200rpm for any long duration. During Hardies Hero's Brock was pushing it and would have been doing 270-273Kph but in the race he would have been 8-10kph less. Unlike modern 2013 Bathurst it was a 50/50 race (survival vs speed) and was far more biased to survival of the fittest.

So Far, not so good,

The Brocky Comparison Race has found 24" tyres on the rear from an A9X window size compared to the Rear Wheel diameter.

A Still Shot of a side view in 1979 of Brock in the A9X will seal this.

Has anybody got one. Dave I

To be a 24" rear at 290-300 wide in a 15" rim it would have to be a 40 profile tyre. Untitled-4_zps33860294.jpg

If that isn't at least 26" I'll eat my mudflaps.

Same height as the 225 X 70 X 15s on my 2WD Hilux.

That's what I'll be running on the back of my UC, believe it or not.

If you look at the story on the Gibson car it says they are a 620, 620mm rolling diameter equates to 24.4inches. The HDT tyres in 79 are bigger than that. Remember HDT were on Bridgestones exclusively in 79, no other team was allowed to use them.

You really get a good idea of just how tall the rear Bridgestones that MHDT used in 79 here in this Brock at Sandown picture. The tyres where part of the changes allowed by CAMS for racing in 1979. If you look at other A9X race cars in 79 many where clearly not as big as the Bridgestones.

One problem with your theory there, thats 78 and the car has Dunlops. Notice the decal on the side Says Hardie Ferado 1000, but the picture is certainly taken at Sandown. This was a practice day HDT prior to Bathurst.

The label on the image web site was wrong and I jumped the gun when looking for a clear profile/width shot. But your definitely right you can see the dunlop brand which was 78.

Great Work You Guy's.

We are starting to get somewhere with these close up pictures of different tyre uses.

Just a Clear Picture on the Day at Bathurst in '79' of Brocky's rear Tyre would be good.

Also, that is a good idea using tyre, profile and rim size to determine what the rolling diametre of the era tyres have. Dave I

In rough round number speak the fronts are about equivalent of a 30 profile the rears 50. Race tyres are width, rolling diameter, rim size. So for instance on the Gibson A9X above in wheels mag its rears 290/620 -15 and fronts 290/520 -15. Divide rd by 25.4 for height.

At the end of the day 260-265kph in the actual 79 race was about it. You could obviously push a few more revs out of the plastic motor but you have to get to the end of 163 laps and the old plastic never liked sustained revs over 6200-6300rpm without it wanting to throw a leg out of bed.  The taller tyre would have been more about saving the plastic from a melt down by having to pull less revs down conrod. Have to remember 400hp was max and most 79 teams probably only had 380Hp. The Frauds had about 100hp more but no Fraud attended jenny craigs and so carried about 350kg's more.

i agree LXSS350(and i love those pics) i watched a very poor quality video on youtube of Brocks pole qualifying lap in '79 where he says he hit 7000 rpm up mountain straight but that he would never use those revs in the race ...more like 6000-6500..the same down conrod straight he got to 6500 rpm but in the race would be more like 6200 rpm.

the other thing to remember is they were always governed by the second hump on conrod if you wanted to keep the boot into it you risked an over rev

Brock talked about this in the VK 1986 race..when he described a lap on camera that he was just feathering the throttle..its all changed now with the kink and more aerodynamic cars

Well that is it:-

6500 rpm / 3.08 diff x 26.6" rears = 268.8 kph

Well done everybody as this is the exact speed Brocky did down Conrod from Information available so far. Dave I

In 1979 there was an A9X going faster than that or any other car in practice. Anyone know who it was and why?

268.8 kph would be right, I thought it was 278 kph or 268 kph from what I remember from the 1979 Bathurst race call on TV

I thought the  Brock HDT A9X was the fastest car on the race weekend of 1979

No, and harveys car wasn't 76 at Bathurst in 1979. Someone had the fastest top speed in practice and it wasn't a HDT car.

Come on mate, a Bog stock off the showroom floor L34 was apparently good for 350HP and easily reved to 7000, but only if you had the optional 10000RPM tacho :stirpot:

Was it stolen and being chased by the cops?
