Well, back in November 2009 I purchased a rolling shell from a forum member in South Australia and took a great road trip to pick it up. Given that I have finally started to make some real progress I thought it was time to start a project thread to record and motivate progress

Road Trip was great fun

The First Job was to remove everything out of Shell and organise it in the shed, Than I could actually see what I had. The first thing I realised was that the Plenum chamber was badly in need of surgery, so I bought myself a spot weld removal tool and in june this year removed the plenum chamber and it was worse than I thought. But know that it is out I can look at finding a good sheet metal worker to correct the anomalies

Check Wandandian wreckers. He did have a 4 door a while back that was being cut up. May be some bits left.

Well the two days ago packed up the Hatch onto a Trailer and took it on a road trip to Albury. I have dropped it into "RECOAT" to be chemically dipped, stripped and have a rust treatment applied. The Guy who runs the joint "Tony" seems genuine and I think very reasonable with his pricing. $3k to do the entire body and all panels. He is going to take a heap of photo's of the process as the car goes through the process. He has obviously spent a heap of cash setting up this almost brand new facility and when I was there had about 6 "classics" in the workshop. He had a 63?? ford ute in the tubs being treated. I will get some photo's of his workshop in about 4 weeks when I go back to get my baby.

Have a look at the Website... www.recoat.com.au

Bye Bye Rusty beast

Well I travelled back to Albury Yesterday to pick up the reborn Hatch..... I am very pleased with the job, Tony (the owner) was great, the finished job was better than I expected and the setup he has is just great. I am not a Chemist but he must have spent a lot of time thinking about the brew of chemicals. I left a couple of rubber grommets and stops on the shell and they came back like new. I will take some more detailed pics over the next few days but here are some initail pics.

owe BTW.... it has revealed some very bodgey repairs that will need some attention.... but that is what I did it for. The C-Pillar is particularly ugly

mmmm nice clean metal to work with. It looks like a great shell. what is your plan for rust proofing internally? fish oil really well once complete or do they dip or spray it in something that is permanent?

I guess if any rusty area's are rust proofed as they are being repaired it should be pretty right. Looks like a great cleaning process and set up anyway.

looking forward to more photos

cheers

No permanent coating but it is coated with something to prevent rust forming initially, or so I was told. I asked them if I needed to rush the shell back into primer and his answer was that so long as it was kept dry (in a shed) I had 12 to 18 months (maybe longer) before it might be an issue.

I will still be hitting it with something, probably not fish oil, looking at a product called "RUST BULLET"

I will e-mail RECOAT to get some technical detail on the coating they apply in the finish. I will post their response

Good advice.

Things may have changed since, but around 20yrs ago a friend with a genuine SS L31 M40 Hatch was given the same advice (keep it dry and you will months and months before you will need to do anything) which is what he did as he saved a few pays whilst the car was in stored in a shed. When he final got down there to move on the next phase, the shell was so bad that it was a write off.

Cavity Wax might be suitable for all those hard to get places, like sills, pillars etc.

Ive had my parts done and the coating is good for up to 12 to 18 months depending on how you store them

You can work the parts with your hands but as soon as you weld/cut/sand its best to etch prime straight away

All cavities need to be rust treated my paint man who's doing my car told me the treatment but I cant remember the name will find out

When I was there the other day tony told me he had a chemistry expert who changed the brew so its more effective and more friendly

TECTYL rust preventive valvoline product for interior cavitys.Spray it in then it will seep into all the seams and hardenens slightly but never really sets.I liken it to Endrust as my car was done from the dealer .All the normal Hatch rust areas have been very minimal if any to this day.Messy shit tho like hot honey till its sets.
