Dave, cast date 28th? April 72, so probably a May or June 1972 HQ.

Cheers

Dave.

Ah, OK - they say to add +1 to the first digit of the engine number for the Year, just checking if this one fell short of 72 - Great Thank's Dave

Mike the 308 V8's with the X on them, what dates do they fall in, say 1972, 1973, 1974 I am thinking

I have be concentrating on the XU-1 era, but I think the SLR or A9X had X marked rods, Larry O'Toole's book covers most of the V8 development, it would be benificial if you could copy, to work out the many differences.

Date configurations changed at times which are an indication of the era, the engine prefix and metric or imperial cast engine size will also be indicators.

But back to the 6's,  1963 will have the month day and then year indicated, ( this continued till about 1970, but some componets took longer to change, and some are mistakenly put in the wrong order on occasions too ) 1973 will have the date arranged day month then year, and lastly 1983 will again have day, month then year, but of course will have 3.3 on the side and a different engine number prefix instead, as well as block upgrades which came from XU-1 NP engine origins.

All of this is explained in the book Torana Tough if you have access to a copy.

Al, as far as I am aware they started around 3/73. Most likley F5000 application but others on this Forum are more clued up on these.
