Can understand not wanting to pull them apart.
The alloy on my Harley, the fork tubes in particular were polished then cleared.
A lot less work to keep them shiny than constant polishing.
Good thing is, the polish before painting doesnt have to be perfect.
The clear takes out a lot of imperfections.
Yeah, once the clear gets pitted, and the moisture gets under it and the alloy starts oxidising, they can look crap.
The forks on a bike take a lot more punishment in terms of chips than the hinges would.
My forks started to show signs around 20000km of clear failure.
But normal cleaning and polishing kept them looking good.
Mr Sheen was a great trick in keeping surfaces protected.
But I had to put the bike in storage for a couple of years while I was working away, and the neglect made the forks look crap.
But a couple hours stripping them, polishing them again and clear coat made them look good again.
Paint has stayed adhered to the polished surface without issue.
Cheers
