Jeff Walsh auto parts in Chain St.

Ok thanks.

Don't know if it's every Supercheap but the one in Mackay gets parts from the local Bursons if they don't have it in store.

Supercheap bought out Marlows here in Vic.
Business strategy I reckon? Came here, opened a store or 2 hoping to be bought out?

yeah marlows got swallowed by supa crap after it expanded there and jon worsfold brought into it...
...malz is owned by the founder of marlows...but it ain't as good :(

Marlows went under Aust wide, due to many differing stories....Supercheap bought what was left of them.

Supercheap do have Bursons as a supplier, but not first choice.

I've found auto parts stores will vary a HUGE AMOUNT in regards to service & stock in certain locations.

As consumers we need to remember how they currently model their business, which is "phone staff/trade assistants" and " counter sales assistants", who either may or may not have any real knowledge of what they are actually trying to sell. I can tell you the wages ain't great, not anywhere good enough to get many talented people into the stores. I know a number of staff at my store who have very little practical car knowledge, then there are others who have lots.

The Aussie "car park" is changing, there are over 50 makes on sale here IIRC, and it's a tough job working out what to keep at what locations. Having said that, Repco also needs to keep more items in their warehouses, so if you call up for said timing cover, the assistant can say sure mate, we can have it in by X time instead of saying "nup, don't have it" or sorry man that's a special buy in, I can get it, but I'll have to get back to you on a price. From Tuesday thru Friday we get 3 runs from the warehouse a day to get urgent parts or unstocked parts in, and on a Monday there are two runs, plus a Saturday morning run too. Trouble is, Repco want to concentrate on car's in the 1 to 15 year old range, after 15 years they are not as interested in keeping parts for them, unless the parts are common to many models.

I know the branch I work at is rather understaffed, which means the service level we can give is not anywhere near what it should be!

Cheers

Repco has one advantage over a lot of places.

Ring up for a part and they can check nationally if they dont have it in store, and get it shipped.

Used them for a wheel bearing for an Econovan a while back.

No one around had one.

Repco located one in another store and had it here in 2 days.

No one else was interested in getting it or said it had to come from overseas

Repco has had every Holden part I needed at the Welshpool WA, Warehouse Branch,

except the WB Universals, which took a Day to get in.

I went into Repco on Sunday to purchase new battery leads. The guy didnt have a clue, they didnt have red battery cable, and the black cable was really expensive, and they didnt have any of the fittings.

Next door was Battery World. They had everything, and they were significantly cheaper.

Dont know why I bothered going to Repco to be honest.

cheers

Repco or Covs are our only real choice here.

Wherever possible I go to Highway Autos in Kelmscott, its run by a couple of old blokes who at least know what I'm asking for and can tell me where to get it or get it in for me.

We could really use a Burson's in Perth though because Malz is now gone and has been taken over by Autobarn, still better than SuperCrap but I'm worried that once the stock goes it won't be replenished.

Also Armadale Auto Parts are pretty good, have a lot of old stuff, but they are Fraud guys and sometimes it feels like I am on enemy territory in there lol.

Still love just walking around that shop though, more chrome in there than I"ve seen in a long time.

good old repco haha, dads been dealing with ever since he could remember, ups and downs, our local store is good when the girls are behind the counter, they know what there talking about, or they'll see me or dad walk in and say help yourself which is quiet fun walking around the back of the shop seeing what is actually behind there.

but if the boys are there, youve gota have alot of time as everything has to be there on the computer or it it isnt in stock and they wouldn't no a sparkplug from a uni joint.

Is it a good idea telling everyone here "the girls" let you and Dad walk around the back of the shop. You may find the next time you go in, it may not happen. You don't know who reads the forum, and while it might take a bit to find which store on the mid north coast does it, a general email out to all stores warning of the consequences in letting customers walk around the back may just stop it. What's the saying, loose lips.............

Our local Repco store has clowns that know nothing about older cars

I went to buy a gasket kit for a Rochester Quadrajet and the guy says is that off a Ford? I laughed and said no its off my Torana , its a Holden

the so called manager walks up and says " I don't care what you say , its off a ford, I'm the manager of the store I should know"

I reached down the front of the desk and grabbed the LH/LX repair book , opened it up and to show the break down of the quaddy,

I looked at the managers face which was going red at this stage, I said to the manager " yeah your the manager of the store but you know frOck all  ,see ? its a Holden "

he obviously was thinking Thermoquad , what idiots!!

I'm not really welcome there anymore lol

I recently walked into my local Repco and asked the guy for a carrier gasket to suit a nine inch... he said "A nine inch what?"

You'd think a little car knowledge would be a prerequisite for someone working at an auto parts store.

When I was a young fella I used to haunt the local Holden Dealer parts guy, asking him to order all kinds of obscure bits for whatever I was playing with at the time, and I don't think I ever saw him look up a part.

I remember I once asked him for the little plastic knob off the analog clock in a VH Commodore and he opened his order book and wrote the part number straight in! The next day, sure enough, he handed me the new knob with the same number he wrote in the book. Buggered if I know how he used to do it?

But I guess it's the same everywhere nowadays, there's very few of the old-school guys left unfortunately. These days everybody designs "systems" so even the dumbest dipshit can stand behind the counter and collect your money, so there's no need, and very little incentive, to actually learn anything.

I often wonder what things will be like in another few decades? The way things are going, the reply by then will be "What's a Holden?"
