In the US they do the BODY tag repro so you can change colour and trim.

Quite possibly, except for the years where the car companies kept records. I know for Mustangs post 1967 you can get a Marti Report.

I contacted Holden and received a .pdf authenticity letter stating the following:

Thank you for contacting Holden Customer Care regarding your 1976 Holden LX Torana
SLR 4 Door Sedan, Vehicle Identification Number – 8D69RGJxxxxxxX.
The following details are taken from our records.
MODEL: 1976 Holden LX Torana SLR 4 Door Sedan (8VD69)
ENGINE: 253 c.i. (4146cc) (L32)
ENGINE NUMBER: R063937
TRANSMISSION: 3.05:1 4 Speed Manual (M20)
AXLE: 3.08:1 Banjo Type (GU4)
BRAKES: Front Wheel Disc (JL2)
AIR-CONDITIONING: Non Fitment
PRODUCTION DATE: 30.09.76

Please note the above information reflects an example of one of our original build 1976
Holden LX Torana SLR 4 Door Sedan’s. However, this only reflects the ‘as built’ state of
your vehicle, according to the Vehicle Identification Number provided. Should you wish to
establish that the vehicle has the original components; it should undergo an independent
check for authenticity. This can be performed by most reputable car clubs.

Edit: I notice there's no trim or colour details :(

The idea is if you have a green GTO and want a black one you can get a body tag to suit the change. It has nothing to do with fraud, it is about making the car how you want it.

I have no issue with replacement tags here that have the same data as the originals, as long as they are like they are today ie with built in "errors" so they are easily picked.

I don't agree with that concept.

For instance some cars have significant price differences based on original colour, a red Ferrari will cost you a $20k premium over any other colour, some of the rarer US Muscle cars are also in that category, purple and pink wasn't seen as manly colours last century but now due to their rarity and a change in people's taste these colours are commanding similar premiums.

It isn't about fraud or what the car is worth, it is about personal taste. The owners don't give a damn about what the car is worth. I'm the same, if I had a bright green Sandman or A9X or L34 and I resprayed the car there is no way in hell i'd be wasting money on green paint. And if I could easily get a remade plate to match the new colour i'd do it and keep the original in the glovebox. People here seem to forget that today, get all worried about what the car is worth or what date code is on its aircleaner wingnut. In the US it is a lot more about personal choice. Same deal as with here, replacement tags appear to be made with errors so they are easily spotted.

Yeah, I know many people feel that way, I'm glad my Torana is still purple, I'm glad my Mustang isn't still Tropical Turquoise.

Collectors is what I'm getting at and when it comes to classic cars in the USA there's so many specifically seeking 'numbers matching' and I suspect collectors here are the same.  When I grew up hotting up or resto-modding was the go, these days there's a growing trend for concours.

Don't forget that the remade Aussie tags are easy to spot. No different to most restamped engines. Buyer beware! All you have to do is compare an original tag to a remade one and the difference is obvious.
