Hey guy, thought it was about time I started a thread on my build. To give you a bit of background I previously owned two other 2door LC's however regretfully sold them both, about 3 months ago I picked up a rolling LC shell for $800 (pretty happy with that) it was missing running gear and interior but most of the important stuff was there. I was fortunate that the last owner had sand blasted and cut most of the rust out already...however some stupid modifications were also done like cutting out the trans tunnel and door handles???? (slap forehead) anyway this is how I picked it up...

First job was to roll the guards.

I was going sit on the car for while...but they changed fairly quickly so off to the panel shop to get started.

Here are some working progress photos, flutes are in and rust repairs to front window sill. Managed to find some cheap doors of a 4 door to use for repairs to my coupe doors, including the door handle section which had been cut out.

Unfortunately the down fall of having the car soda blasted some time ago meant some surface rust was coming through on the roof, so spent about 3 hours sanding the roof back then lightly grinding the surface rust and rust converting. I only got half the roof done, so a few more hours to go. Fortunately only the roof and bonnet have been affected, the rest of the panels are good as gold.

Next on the cards was the rear quarter panel, as usual these had rusted out, luckily I got some of the replacement rust repairs panels with the car. However the inner rear guard had to be made from scratch, this is the progress so far.

Hi Andrew

Good progress so far, the shell lines look pretty good.

How did the lip roller go, is that one of the ones for sale on ebay?

Regards Simon

Cheers Simon, yea I'm happy with the progress.

It's my mates guard roller, so not sure where he got it, cost him $80 from memory. Fairly easy to use when u set it up right... The rear guards are the hardest, because u have to roll 2 layers of the body sheet metal that come together....so a little more force and time, the front is much easier because there is only 1 layer.

Cheers Andrew

My thoughts so far are,

Colour- lone o'ranger orange
Wheels- thinking 15x7 superlites
Engine- n/a 202 with triples
Gearbox-Aussie 4 or supra 5 (hope to pick up a running engine/trans combo for sake of ease)
Brakes- converting the front drums to discs soon and keep the rear drums
Diff- standard banjo with 336 or 355, LSD would be nice too
Interior- have no idea yet, but plan on using Lj gtr steering wheel, so will be changing the colomn over
Build time- 3 years, I'm budgeting 100 week and hope to complete the car for under 15k

Cheers, Andrew

It's gonna look fantastic in that colour

Why did you have to roll the guards? Was it just the inner lip you flattened?

Yea judge, can't wait for the colour to start going down.

Yep spotn on, when I say roll the guards I just mean flattening the inner lip for the little bit extra clearence on the inside... I'm not flaring the guards or anything

Cheers mike,

Yep floor patch will fit nicely as expected...managed to get those rear springs and retainers fitted too (lucky they weren't the Lj ones, haha). Thanks again for helping me out with those parts.

So progress this week... Have trial fitted the trans tunnel (thanks to mike cats) to fit the gaping hole left by the last owner who decided to cut it out.

The rear lower quarter has been welded in...just need to clean up this area a little bit to get it smooth.

Today I had my first go at working with KBS rust seal... cleaned and painted the inside of my doors, was tedious work but got there eventually. Bunning have 40 centimetre long paintbrushes with a 45 degree bend on them for $5, perfect to get into all the little corners and grooves on the inside of door.

Next on the cards is the passenger flutes, front lower guard repair and floor repairs....stay tuned.

Had a go at refurbishing my tail light lenses today and couldn't be happier with the end result...here's the process...

1. Gently remove lenses from tail light surrounds.

2. Using a razor blade, scrape all the old silicon and glue from the lenses.

3. Soak in a degreasing agent

4. Wash with soapy water and soft bristle brush, getting into all the grooves...the cleaner the better the end result.

5. Purchase VHT red nite-shades ($17 from super cheap)

6. Mask up lenses and PAINT. I did a coat on the inside and the outside of lenses.

7. Sit back and admire your work (last photo is a before and after)

Unfortunately you cant purchase orange taillight paint, but once the reflective indicator lense is back behind the taillight lense you can barely notice any fading.

Ok one thing ill add to that for anyone else looking to do the same. DO NOT over paint the lense. The more you go may look brilliantly red but when you re fit it they will appear smoked. It's hard to tell when they are off as the light easily passes through, but not as much so when they are on the car. Few coats is enough, you can always re coat.

AND i was shown a can of orange tail light paint, where to get it from is another question.

Yep agreed judge, 1 coat on each side is sufficient. You made me curious and I did manage to find this can of orange taillight paint....http://www.ebay.com/...M-/221303421918 . Bit steep if you ask me, I happy to leave mine as they are.

Cheers

Wow pricey. Im sure VHT does it just no one stocks it! Maybe we need to call VHT?

Yeah i was doing a friends XD and as it was drying he thought it would be a good idea to add another 4 coats. Looks great in the sun but when on the car where the light cannot pass through, its very dark

Ok, progress for the last fortnight...have turned the car around and started working on the drivers side. Rust repairs to the front window area, cut front guard to fit flute...had a look inside and its relatively good condition, will get a coat of rust seal on then weld the flute in. Next on the cards will be the lower front guard, inner seal and A pillar.
