After much googling  i havent found a definite answer to my question!

Will the the V8 billet servo piston fit a 6cyl Trimatic???

I see that apparently the 253 & 6cyl boxes have the same amount of frictions etc & the 308 box has more!

But is the servo piston the same for all?

Cheers

Yes all trimatic servo pistons are the same from 4 cyl to 6 and 8.

The 253 and 6 cylinder versions generally have different numbers of clutches too, and the clutch apply pistons are different for different quantities. However the servo piston is the one which applies the band so as above no difference between versions.

ok im new to slushboxes (always liked swapping cogs myself :3gears: ) Recently i purchase of a 4 door LJ to be a cheap drag car with the intention of dropping in a 202 i built many years ago & muncie & 3.9's into it to see what it will do.

The 202, muncie & 3.55's did 13.9 some 24 years ago.

But as the my 202 is still on the other side of the country i was thinking of maybe turboing the 161 thats  in  the car just for giggles cose i got a couple laying around & get a trimatic ready that may well end up behind the 202 after the muncie.

I was given a couple of 6cyl trimatics both apparently good when removed but one has bellhousing removed (which i have) .

Anyway the complete box cleaned up good & has a convertor that looks new  so i whipped the pan off & its spotless inside :)

I pulled the valve body off & drilled out some holes, bolted the 1-2 accumulator & ordered a billet servo piston. i will probably get a 3500 or 4000 stall for it then see what happens!

if it doesnt do so well i have a trimatic from a 253 but the id plate is blank with only 0681566 stamped on it which i presume is the serial No.

Anyone know how to id if its a 253 or 308 tri with out the usual letters?

I don't think there's any way to tell from the outside without the two letters on that plate. If the plate is still there try shining a bit of light on it at different angles to see if the remnants of the letters show up maybe?

which side is the selector shaft on, later autos had the selector on the left hand side for use in commodores, these could be id by the ribs on the in side of the bell housing, the 308 had lots of ribs compered to the 253. as for the early ones there is no easy way to see from the out side. the best way to check is to pull the front off and remove the input shaft, this holds the 3rd clutch. this clutch has 4 frictions for the 253 and 5 for the 308. but as for fitting the v8 box to the 6, the input shaft is different as well as the bell housing.  the big question is why 3500 to 4000 stall, the stall speed should be worked out by your- cam shaft spec- diff ratio- tyre size, ect  Don't guess it. get the converter shop to work out the best stall speed.

This is a partial list of trimatic applications,it was very hard to read some of the print on the paper as it is faded and the rest of the list is unreadable.

Feel free to edit the list if you find mistakes.

All the boxes i have have the selector on the right. The 253 box is still under a HZ wagon so cant easily see ribs till i get motivated & need to pull it out.

The 3500-4000 is rough number i pulled out of my arse atm. Will definitely get professional advise  when i get some more solid idea of the rest of the drive line.

Rough plan atm is use bits i got already laying around ie... injected red manifold, turbo, trimatic, 3.9 bango.

Am looking at possibly mechanical fuel injection with Methanol.

Guinea pig engine will be the stock 161  currently in the car to get things sorted then at a later date rebuild the 202 into something more Methanol suited!

Plans change daily & also with beer level!
