Ironically enough my SS L31 (5.0 Litre) was bought by me in 1997 with a black, smooth dash with the lower half in silver.
Even my SS ashtray is in black........

Greg can you post a pic of it never seen a smooth black dash before

ALL LX SLR and SS dashes were silver, not black, or woodgrain. No Torana ever came with a black smooth dash.

PO may have installed a woodgrain one painted black.
Many SL/R's, 5000's, SS's and GTS's were stolen, a dash was a prized target for thieves, dash parts are simple to remove and very easy money on the Trading Post or at any GMH wreckers.
LH-LX Toranas and HQ-HX's are easy to steal and they'd steal the car just for the dash.

My 5.0 Litre SS has a dash with the top section being black and smooth. The lower sections either side of the steering column are silver and smooth. The black main section appears to be unpainted SMOOTH black plastic. Even my ashtray is smooth black with the raised SS 'badge'?
Hopefully I can post an old photo...
I can take closer photos of the car as it is now (not running and unrestored) if I get time and/or can be bothered. I did finish night shift only an hour ago!

Ok I found my original receipt and I actually bought this car in July 1994, not 1997 as I said at first. Looking at the time of my post there is the distinct possibility of inebriation at the time.
I am by no means an authority on my Torana, let alone anyone else's. I can only relay what my Torana dash looked like when I bought it 18 years after it was made.
The only changes I made to the dash's appearance are these:
I painted a vent surround and some of the raised ridges green to (almost) match the exterior.
I painted the ashtray face with spray can gloss black and the SS badge in green by hand. It was originally (as I bought it) in unpainted smooth black plastic with the SS badge in Red. I haven't been able to find any photos of the ashtray as it was when I bought the car but it was definitely black, like the rest of the upper dash.
As you can see from the pictures I have taken this morning, the upper dash is obviously VERY dusty but equally obviously BLACK and SMOOTH. The contrast to the silver section and the embossed grain patterned vinyl is obvious.
There is no Silver over-spray between the dash and the inner of the glovebox or on the rear of the ashtray face. I don't know if there is on the Silver SS dashes, I'm just stating that mine doesn't feature over-spray and there is no evidence that the dash or ashtray ever was Silver. As I said, it is unpainted, raw plastic and being that I bought the car in 1994 I don't know if anyone back then was taking the time to strip the Silver from dashes and if they did, they did an amazing job on mine with no crazing from chemical and no evidence of scratches.
As you can see my SS has sat somewhat neglected for over 15 years and I had never put much thought into the colour the dash is until coming across Pearse's post here.
If "No Torana ever came with a black smooth dash" as you say REDA9X, what have I got here?

Fascia has been sanded back to black plastic underneath, did this to mine when re painting it and thought about leaving like this for a split second.

By the look of the green highlighting, a product of the 80's I reckon...
Definitely not factory so the dash may have been altered as well.

As I said in the post fellas, I was the one that painted the green "highlights" on the dash. I almost instantly regretted doing it but I was just out of my teens.
If the dash was stripped/sanded as suggested they did an amazing job as not even the tiniest amount of silver paint remains...

May be possible your black dash panels were replacement parts. My brother replaced some broken plastic dash panels on his VK and the replacement parts from GM were unpainted. From memory it cost him as much to have them painted to match his dash as it did to buy them.

Greg wipe the silver bits with some thinners.it will match the rest of your dash

Thanks fellas. I didn't think I had a special one off dash, It just never occurred to me why mine was different.
I actually prefer it to the silver and might change the lower half as you suggest Kirk.

Could you share the process of refurbing the SS ashtray? Is it possible to get some premixed colour in an aerosol and spray away?
Thanks

Hi Kirk
Thanks for the reply, are you sure the paint won't dissolve the plastic??
Posted 22 June 2014 - 12:34 AM
Hi Darryl
it wont but if it makes you feel more comfortable you can get vinyl based paint mixed
