So... I have bought myself a little mig welder and am ready to cut out the copious amounts of rust from my car. Where is the best, (by best I mean cheapest) place to source metal to repair panels from? Do I get all the same size or a couple of different thicknesses? What do I ask for?

Also, what is the best way to remove bog. Hammer & chisel, or just grinder/wire brush drill bit?

I got mine from De Lena metal in Osborne park. Helpfull and cheap sometimes, depends who you get and what mood they're in. Not sure on the spelling of name.
I used two thickness, one for panel and the other for chassis.
I've got some scraps left over you can have if you're out near Balcatta.

Cheapest spot is smash repair shops.

Ask if you can scratch through there scrap bin looking for old panels.

Most wont charge you.

Re bog removal, the idea is to not make more work for yourself.

Hammer and chisel is right out.

Also to much heat is bad as well.

A 5" sandig disk with 24 and 36 grit disks is the best, perhaps a wire buff to clean up stubborn low areas.

Dint do anything quickly, car panels heat up to the point of warping in as little as 5 seconds of carelessness.

Cheers.

Thanks Marty. I live about 45 minutes from you, but may find myself during the course of the week close enough to stop past and grab some scrap off of you. I will let you know a day or two before. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice Bomber. What about a belt sander? Any good on a car for rust, or paint removal?

I suspect i will buy a pre-fab boot as mine has been cut out already by previous owner, but the floors look good from what i can tell. It is just the panels requiring most work. Mostly the bottoms of doors, rear quarters, bit of the boot, and rear lights. Some pieces behind the panels will require cutting/welding too. So should I just buy 1mm sheet or .9mm and 1.2mm or something?

So i called in to Midalea and grabbed a new sheet for $60. He says they dont stock as they rust too quick, and needs to order it in. How quick will it rust in a shed in Perth environment. (not by the ocean) Do i need to coat it in something, or will it last a year or so? If it gets some surface rust is it just a case of sand it off and put it on the car? Or is further prep involved?

I wouldnt store a belt sander near a car yet alone use one on it.

Bloody hell, a bit of humidity in the air and my new rolled steel is covered in rust, like a three day growth! :(

Ah well it comes off easy enough.

Hey Gary, Sorry I only just saw this thread, We get our sheet from bluescope, but any of the big suppliers can sell you some.

We use 1.0mm cold rolled sheet for fabricating patch panels as its much much easier to form then hot rolled, we also keep 1.6mm and 3.0mm in stock for the heavier duty stuff (chassis rails etc) but this is hot rolled

We also coat all of our sheets in a POR-15 product called SW-2 http://ppcco.com.au/coatings_sw2.htm to stop them from rusting and it lasts a long time as you dont use much at all, West Coast automotive supplies sell it

There is nothing better then working with nice clean steel... if its only very light rust you can pretty much wipe it off with some Ranex http://www.bondall.c...Rustbuster.html Ranex itself when wiped on a sheet will stop any flash rusting for quite awhile... we use SW2 tho as you can paint straight over it without having to worry about neutralizing it, Altho even still we wizz the panels with a orbital anyway before spraying primer.

Or yea you can just sand the rust off... but if you leave the panels for too long they will start to pit abit and takes longer to sand and you are just thinning out the material so its better to protect it and prevent the rust rather then try fix it later.

I hope this was helpful let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Gaz, looks like all of my questions have been answered here as well, I'm no sheet metal worker so I was thinking of getting a mobile panelbeater to do about 4 hours work to my HB, i reckon that'll be about it for the rust side of things, at least i'll be able to get it regoed and drive the old girl. If anyone does know of anybody that will come to my place and do some work on it just let us know, i'm up in Heathridge, north perth, cheers
