Hi guys,

So I have the Workshop ready. Floor should be hard by Saturday. Its time to buy a hoist.

Now I have spent hours on the internet, and also calling local businesses in Perth, but still no closer to picking a hoist. Been looking second hand too but all 3 phase and old as.

Requirements are:

- Clear Floor

- At least 3.5 tonne (parentals Cruiser)

- Pads nice and low for my stupid low commodore

- Single Phase

- Automatic unlock to lower would be a nice to have

Now there has been a lot of talk about China hoists, to which a lot of people have said they have really picked up their game in the last few years and are now decent.

I main questions are:

- Do you have one and where did you get it?

- Is it any good? Any problems?

Cheers!

if you can afford it get a molnar by far the best most reliable hoists. and easy to get parts for.

I would love a Molnar, its just the cost of it that holds me back, the "All rounder" is about $7000 I think.

China hoists can be between $2500 to $3500 for clear floor.  As it wont get used that much (not in a business going up and down all day) I think a china one will do the job.

Hi

Tufflift hoists are a sponsor of Man and Machine. I have had one for nearly 3 years and have put a lot of people onto them. Yes they are made in China but to strict Tufflift and Australian Standards. They are slightly dearer that most other Chinese made hoists but are built stronger. Check them out here: http://www.tufflift....try-experience/

Cheers

I have the same hoist as bazza, although it doesn't meet all of your criteria ( ie clear floor ,  auto unlock )  it appears to be well made,

I am very happy with it and would recommend it  highly  for a cheaper hoist.

cheers rodney

Have a look at Rotary Lifts assymetrical hoists. The two we have at work are by far the most versatile being able to lift anything from a Suzuki Swift to a Silverado to a Crafter van which is about 9m long. They have a 4500kg capacity and have been super reliable for us.

I too have the TuffLift.

Been in 4+ years, clear floor, 4T lift, single side lock release, 240v, ect.

Been a good reliable machine.

Worth every cent just for the convenience it brings.

If you can wait and can find one locally i'd hold out for a used Molnar. Biggest issue though will be the single phase requirement, although if you have an eleco mate and get a hoist cheap enough it isn't hard to either change the motor or fit a VSD to it.

When I bought my Molnar hoist new I had it optioned with the single phase motor cost me an extra five hundred, easiest option may be to get a price on a single phase motor from them if you go down the Molnar path.

Cheers Dave

I looked into it for a mate, a motor was about $500-$700 plus a bit of wiring upgrade as single phase draws more current.

Thanks for all the info guys.

I ended up going with the TuffLift shipped to Perth. Went for the clear floor and Andrew their helped out by giving me a good price on the 4.5 tonne as the 4.0 tonne was out of stock. :)

just noticed this pic on a For Sale ad on the web.

I always thought you lifted cars by the chassis??...that's what I've been doing.....or is the method in the pic just poor practice?

I have to disagree and say it must be a real pea brain that can bend a chassis rail with a hoist (ie jump on car whilst on hoist or have a ton of bricks in the vehicle, but even then unlikely) I'm guessing he used the wood as the pads didn't go quite low enough to get under the rails. You're more likely to bend the dimples in the floor pan like that than bend a rail. Personally I always use rails, never marred one. I also have a 4 post and getting 4 wheels off is not a problem either

i wouldnt say they where overloaded or jumped on,,

misplaced cups maybe or just that they where cups and not flat pads could be the main problem,

either way i have seen chassis damaged from where the car was lifted.
