Hi All,

I'm planning to put in a GTR style interior and have purchased a set of the stainless retainers for the top of the door trim panels - just need to source some suitable screws and make the holes...

Would somebody be able to post photos of the original holes in the door + of the screw used to attach the trim?

I assume there has to be a fairly large indentation to allow for the counter sunk portion of the trim.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Jeff

Hi Jeff

Here are a few photos of the trim retainers installed (didn't have a photo of the bare door but they are countersunk to a match fit of the retainer so they seat into place ,

i used counter sunk self tappers (don't know what gauge) but as long as the head fits snuggly in the retainer & not sitting too much above it ,it will be sweet .they must not be any longer than 4mm for the front screw on the rear retainers as there is a panel behind the hole.

as you are drilling the holes ,you can choose the gauge .

as you can see in the photos ,you can line the rear ones up with the seat belt anchor point on the rear quarter & mark your holes that way but…..

have you got trim tops ???

i would suggest that you have you door trim and clip it into place with the retainer sitting on top ,then mark the panel where the retainer sits ,because if you drill them first then fit the trim later .the trim top may not quite reach the retainer to sit into it ,or it may be too close that the trim sits off the panel .

I just installed them & it was difficult enough with the holes already there as the trim tops (curved section that makes up the top shape of the trim)were fibreglass.

If you are lucky enough to have a set of original metal trim tops ,your laughing...

If not ,i used aftermarket front ones from aussie muscle car parts in Moorebank NSW for $120.00 each & Attached File  IMG_2596.JPG   190.27K   27 downloadsAttached File  IMG_2483.JPG   537.54K   26 downloadsAttached File  IMG_2482.JPG   241.16K   31 downloadsfibreglass rear ones (that fit really well .

hope this helps

Currently fitting these also, can you please post a photo of the trim panel.

How does the trim panel attach to the door?

Hi Cliff,

Thanks heaps for the photos - they definitely help....

Yes, I have a set of the metal trim tops...  I purchased a complete set of original, but stuffed, GTR trim cards which have the 4 metal tops still attached.  I think I'll take your advise and use the stuffed cards as a guide and mount the stainless trim as per them - I just hope that when I get new door cards they don't vary in size too much.

I've managed to find the below image which gives an idea of what the holes look like - just got to figure out what to use to make the indentation and then drill the hole @ the bottom.

No, I haven't seen them available anywhere.

I've made a start on mounting the GTR door trim retainers and found the trims have more holes than swiss cheese...  Can someone please advise which of these holes are in the correct place?

The right hand side has a hole that almost lines up with the one in the stainless trim...

20140426_164259.jpg

Whilst the left hand side is further down, in line with a hole at the hinge end of the panel...

20140426_164313.jpg

20140426_164332.jpg

Also, are these holes supposed to be there?  There is no matching hole @ the other end...

20140426_164423.jpg

Does anybody have a picture of the front door trim installed on a door, showing screw holes and the type of retainer used?  I assume they should be something like these trim screws....

Thanks heaps,

Jeff

Jeff, AFAIK there should not be any screw holes through the GTR vinyl trim. My guess is someone has added those screws to hold the top part of the trim to the door as the metal trim tops were coming loose from the door card.

Just noticed the screws through the ends of the silver inlays. They should not be there either.

As  mentioned  in  the  previous  posts  ,  the  holes  in  the  silver  inlay  and  the  hole  next  to  the  door  lock  ferrule  are  not  factory  screw  holes .

How  ever  the  2  holes  either  end  of  the  metal  top  that  run  parallel  with  the  stainless  strip  are  original  holes  and  thus  are  used.

The  factory  LC  shop  manual  does  not  show  this.

Regarding  the  correct  screw  and  washer.

They  used  a  unique  dished  special  washer  with  the  outside  diameter  neing  not  much  bigger  that  the  head  of  the  screw.

I  am  not  sure  how  to  put  up  pics  but  can  send  some  who  can  hopefully  put  them  on  the  forum  for  all  to  see .

Hi jeff

I took off my door trim today as I had to fix the outer weather strip ,so heres a few photos of mine

Its entirely up to you if you want to use the extra screws in the trim at the top but i think they are not necessary and make the trim look like ,,,oh it doesn't fit properly so I'll just stick a screw here & one there .(even if it is original)

the retainer will hold it in at the top(the snib will aid this as well) and there is trim clips just under the metal trim top that hold it nice and tight

A much cleaner look in my eyes but thats just me

cheers and good luck with it

You can see the 2 SS screws with cupped washers at front/back near the top, these are original with factory holes in the door

should add these 2 holes are also in the metal trim that fits on top of the door card

1,,,just like Limos has the screws

1,,,, just like my one without ,both 100% original cars

They actually don't look too bad as when the door is closed you don't see the screws ,

Hey Guys,

Thanks heaps for all the posts and really good information.... it's very helpful.

From photos I've seen elsewhere of LC GTRs there has been a mix of with & without the two trim panel screws but my reading of this section of the manual posted by Cliff indicates the screws should be present - they're just not in the images.

manual_ref_01.jpg

Cliff, I agree with you - they do indeed look like an after thought.  I guess I'll see how the trim panel sits once I get a new set and add them if need be.

Thanks again guys.

Jeff
