I believe the M22 four speed and 3 speed input shafts will interchange, but the M20 isn't a correct match

Correct. But there is no V8 M22 unless you make it yourself using a 6cyl M22 with a HG onwards V8 3spd input shaft and the correct cover for the shaft (neoprene or scroll seal).

So to answer Leigh's question, you need to find a V8 3spd input shaft, and if the seal is right use the input shaft cover off the V8 M20. There were NOS ones getting around on Ebay, might be still some around.

Get a new one, they are around. Or get a whole box. 3spd was the standard box behind 253 for most HT-WB so plenty around.

They are all the same except for the HT V8 close ratio box. Just put it in 1st and if it is 3.07:1 you are OK. HT V8 box was about 2.5:1, it was a far higher rated box torque wise - I think GMH intended to fit it behind the 308 but never did.

There is a V8 M22 Aussie, has the same ratio as a M20 1st gear almost, the 6 cyl M22 is different, 1st gear is 3.74:1. Dave I

No factory V8 M22 aussie 4spd. Only available in 6cyl form. Originally it wasn't even called M22, just wide ratio M20 (as opposed to the XU1's close ratio M20).

If you build one yourself from a 6cyl M22 it has exactly the same ratios as the 6cyl box.

Ok, sorry Mate,

Must of read some official hog wash,

You will be right about changing an input shaft in the M22 ( 6 cyl only ) box to create the correct ratio for the V8. Dave I

as Dr Terry explains,

M20 just means a standard 4 speed, but my WB Tonner has M22 stamped on the Tag, which is the 6 cyl type, seperating them as a different Ratio Box to the others hey.

I now think Leigh's question is almost answered,

as the Ratio of the 3 speed box is a different match, so that could be why they cannot be swapped.

On the other hand, is there a different dimension stopping the change. Dave I

The way I understand it is the tooth count and gear diameter of the M15 (3spd) input shaft is different to the M20 input shaft.

The V8 M15 input shaft mates up with the 6 cyl M22 cluster gear because the M22 cluster has the same tooth count and gear diameter as the M15 cluster at the input shaft end, but that is the only similarity between the gear ratios on the M15 and M22 clusters.

Yes, there should be a full part number if it is a genuine part. Don't know the part number for the V8 3spd input shaft though.

Reproduction gearbox parts tend to just use the last three digits of the genuine part number.

Found this much so far.

Holden Aussie input shaft part numbers.

9930921 = 6cyl M15 (3spd) w/neoprene oil seal.  (Slinger type input shaft 7433832)

9930922 = ???                                                      (Slinger type input shaft 2816743)

9930923 = 6cyl M20 (4spd) w/neoprene oil seal.  (Slinger type input shaft 2813494)

9930924 = 8cyl M21 (4spd) w/neoprene oil seal.  (Slinger type input shaft 2813495)

9930925 = 8cyl M20 (4spd) w/neoprene oil seal.  (Slinger type input shaft 2817577)

My guess is 9930922 is the V8 M15 input shaft.

To answer your question ----

I don't know but the new number for HQ shaft suggests to me that there is something different with these .

yel327 might know .
