I have a 1256 engine that has a head with "HB" stamped on it. I think the HB engines were only 1159. Do both the 1159 and 1256 engines share the same head? as in vales sizes, etc. can someone help so I can continue the engine rebuild, or look for another head

Ta heaps

I couldnt tell you weather the heads are the same but i doubt they are. The hb only had the 1159. I think the 1256 was the later lc engine and i thort they were a slanty type engine but i could be wrong. Cheers jake

I thought they were the same but parts books lists 4 head assembly numbers for the 70 engine which I would think was the 1256 and 2 numbers for the 1159. I saying that the heads maybe interchangeable just not the same. they appear to have diff size valves

slanty engines are 1600 and 1800, also 2300 version in bedford vans, european

Google research says the 1256 has bigger valves. Of note on this site: http://www.classicca...e/vauxhall-viva

it mentions:

"The ohv engines come in three sizes: 1057cc, 1159cc and 1256cc and most parts are interchangeable although from late ‘70 the cylinder head bolt sizes changed; remember this if buying a decoke set."

That would mean a HB (HB Viva last made July 1970) head wouldn't fit the 1256 engine (late 71 intro) unless the bolt holes have been modified. Anyway best to get the 1256 head it looks like.

All the different sizes and versions of these engines is a bit of a headache   . I recall someone saying that auto and manual blocks are different too, don't know if that's true or not.  Plus to add more confusion you're in NZ which means you got both Toranas and Vivas?

Do both the 1159 and 1256 engines share the same head? as in vales sizes.

Different bolt diams, valves are stuff all diff, you can swap worn valves around and notice no difference. Valve seats are wider on 1256. Oil water holes approx same location.
Springs are different length & thickness. Rockers are same pressed steel.

Auto have starters that bolt to block, manual starters to box.
Just cut off starter mount and bolt up manual box.

I realize this thread is a little old now but can anybody tell me if the 1256 is a better engine than the 1159? I assume that as the years went on they improved , well thats what im hoping anyway. And are the manifolds the same? Well same pattern anyway i no the manifolds are different as the 1159 has the side draft and the 1256 has a down draft. Could i put my side draft onto the 1256 or would i be better off rebuilding and sticking with the down draft?

The 1159cc engine had the tiny downdraught as standard. The side-draught CD was part of the 'Series 70' option in HB/LC/LJ.

The 1256cc engine (sold as the 1300) was released for the introduction of the LJ, while the 1159 soldiered on in the base model Torana 1200.

I would use the CD side-draught & manifold on the 1256cc engine.

*manuals* have starters that bolt to block, *autos* starters to box.
Just cut off starter mount and bolt up *auto* box. Apologies for two years ago. NFI what I was drinkingg then.
