Sorry to hear Vic..... have been there myself.

I like DJ's idea :)  if not just let it rest in the shed until the time is right.....

Sorry to hear that Victor
Like the others have said. Just sit on it and do it when you feel you can. We were having twin girls but lost one on the operating table. Not a day goes by I don't think what it would have been like if she made it and that was 3 years ago but like they say life goes on. I think DJ's idea is awesome.
Again deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Hi all

Finally looking like I'm going to start on the car.

This is the plan.

Strip boot, roof and bonnet as the paint is to far gone to be saved. The rest of the paint is still pretty good.

Clean out brake system, put a kit in master cylinder. Check calipers and brake cylinder.

Refresh engine. Just going to keep it stock. Extractors, electric distributor is the only change I will make.

What I'm want to know is what is the best way to get the paint off.

The only other thing I might have to do is the bushes.

Don't want a show car just want something I can take out for a spin on the weekends and don't really care about making perfect back to what it came out with .

It's going to be very close, I'm just not prepared to chase everything down to get it back to factory.

Hydraulic clutch, electric distributor, extractors and a tow bar are the only changes, so close enough for me.

Any tips with getting the paint would be great.

Thanks Victor

Paint is over-rated. Just get the fluids changed and drive it.

Hi Victor, I found that it was better to get a new master cylinder than re-build. Just beware of the super low cost Chinese versions. You don't want to fix paint again.

Do one job at a time. Leave the body work until last.

That way you can get the odd drive in, enjoy it and stay motivated.

Join a club and get onto the club permit scheme.

My Dad worked for Bill Pattersons in Ringwood for 20 years, so seeing your paperwork was nice. :-) Preserve all of that stuff.

Got some paint stripper.

This is the boot lid, you can see the paint failing. The darker paint was under the rear spoiler.

So I started doing small 15 x 15 cm spots with the stripper.

Didn't leave the stripper on for very long so was taking just the top coat off.

Put some more stripper on.

You can see in the last picture the rust that was under the paint. It's more of a stain. When running you hand over it you can't feel that it's pitted. You can see where the spoiler was and the paint was still good no rusty stain.

Nice work Victor, how many coats of stripper did it take to get back to bare metal?

Seeing as I have never used paint stripper before, I put it on and didn't wait for it to start to blister. So that what you see in the first photo.

Put on second coat and still didn't wait long enough. So third coat waited a bit longer.

I'm sure if I waited it would have been one.

I think it work good for a $14.50 paint stripper from Bunnings.

Finished off removing the rest of the paint with this sander and ran over the whole panal.

Than I put some Ranex rustbuster over the boot. I left it on for about 10 minutes, wiped it off with a damp rag. This clean off the rust stain that was there. Clean it really nice.

Wipe the boot with methylated spirit. Let it all dry then ran a tac cloth over it.

Put some etch primer on let that dry than put some red primer on to seal it.

Might have not done everything right, so am happy to hear what I've done wrong.

Any help would be great, next is the bonnet.

That diggers paint stripper is a frOcking beast.

Ive been using it in my house.

Usually use Camstrip for automotive type stuff though.

Pro tip #1, cover the panel in plastic after putting the stripper on. Keeps the fumes in, so it works faster and you dont get as biga headache. You can get rolls of plastic with masking tape along one edge that fold out to whatever size, 900, 1800 and 2700 are common, very cheaply from your local paint shop. Bunnings may have the stuff, never looked.

#2 Stripper also works best if you apply a real thick film of it, 1-2mm thick.

#3 a pressure cleaner is great for getting the paint off after applying the stripper, if you have a suitable area to do it in as it does go absolutely everywhere.

#4 dont take a piss directly after handling the stripper, though you probably worked that one out already :tease:

Rest looks good.

Hi Victor, He definitely knew Guy Nevett, I remember the name myself, I'll ask about Ken. I'll let you know what he says.

Hi Victor, Dad says yeah he knew both of them.

"Hi I certainly do the top one Guy Nevitt who was the Managing Director of Patterson Cheney he was my Boss  very strict but a good person if you listened to him and did what he asked but if I thought of something and I thought it would be better a different way around as a car or a ute on the showroom he would listen think about it and if he liked it he would be happy to go with it .

Ken Woodhouse was salesman who was ok but not as good as Guy."

I have something that you might be interested in Victor. As a kid I used to collect stickers and my Dad gave me a dozen of these. I still have one left. I noticed this on the back of your window and thought it might be good to put it onto the back of your car to replace the original. Dad was manager of the pre-delivery department. So his team would have put them onto all of the cars, including yours.

I agree the Diggers paint stripper is good.  Just make sure you get the industrial strength one (which I didn't do once when I was in a hurry).  Cheers Ron

Steve that is something I would be very interested in.

I've got lot's of suff from the dealer, even a letter from them saying sorry for spilling brake fluid underthe master cylinder and that they will repaint it.

Just in case I ripe mine gettig it off.

Not many around like this Victor. Be careful not to damage the value of it.

I'll keep the sticker for you. My car will be back on the road by September. Be good to cruise your way and drop it off. I'll PM you my number.

Yes. My uncle also worked there(in spare parts) and knew him too. Dad said he was a big bloke who looked quite young.
