hi I have a 6 with a trimatic and it has a high pitch noise witch sounds like its coming out of gear box. more when cold. have had it up to speed then turned motor of and rolled and it is still there. don't think wheels or brakes because when you put your foot on brake it has no affect. all so its sound like in middle of car. put new good uni joints in so not that. any ideas guys?? hope something you can fix with out taking the box out

don't think so bomber sounds up front. just asked my engine guy he said maybe brake callipers sticking. but you would think when I put my foot on brakes it would change ?/?      the brakes do make a very hi pitch noise when I first go backwards after sitting for a week. maybe linked ?? he said not to much in gear box that would make that type of noise

hi purrlx can do but when we drove it and turned  of the motor the noise was still there you would say the engine and converter would not be rotating when turned off

So you pushed the car in neutral and noise still there?? May be worth dropping tailshaft and push to see if noise goes away.

undo the diff plug and check the diff oil for metal flakes with your finger , also check the trans oil condition . Bad front wheel bearings can sometimes sound like they come from the tunnel. Did the noise sound louder when you turned the motor off ? ( i think no oil would be pumping in the trans )

My 80 series had a pretty bad diff whine, it kinda surrounded you, didnt really "come from the back" so to speak, only reason i mention it.

That said, it changed dramatically with vehicle speed (occured between 60 and 90, then came back again at about 115) and also varied with throttle position.

Cheers.

Does it have a Banjo?

If so there is a good chance it is that.

Years ago I thought my manual box was noisy and eventually had gone, but turned out the Banjo had sh@t itself and my box was fine.

Maybe the noise gets carried up the drive shaft so it sounds like its in the middle?

I dunno, it is a hollow tube that would most likely transmit sound quite well.

got the same problem in the WB Tonner,

changed gearboxes and still sounds like a Helicopter at all speeds,

do have a 2.78 rear end to put in to see if that fixes it.

drivers side wheel bearing changed as well, no different

Its not a tyre is it Dave?

I have a problem with the muddies on the Cruiser where one section of the tyre makes a different noise to the rest and it sounds like a Helicopter too.

Ha Ha, very hard to explain, only by a recording I could, but, I had better increase the noise level.

If you have ever have had an MRI scan, this is the loudest part, but all the time.

It's like, if your not deaf already, this noise will make you.

thanks for the in put will check diff. I also talked to my engine man again. there was I guy building a full house 202 the head and manifold flowed 300hp roller cam all the good stuff in side.he then pulled the plug and said you have it and sell it to get your money back for machine work so every thing there no money spared.  he said he could do a good deal for the lot. we talked some more and then he said I could have the lot and put to gether  for 2500. I have a new converter siting in shed plus a gear box that has had some work done to it. so I think I will pull the lot out and start again. the offer is to good to turn down. cant stop smiling about the offer. I no he likes the car so he would like it to go to good home.. happy days

I've just spent nearly that money on machining and parts for a cylinder head, and a cam and lifters.

Unless the other lad has handed over a lot of coin already to cover the majority of it, and just walkd away, theres something not adding up.

If you buy this motor and it is as good as he says it is, there is no point checking your diff, you're going to need a new one.  :spoton:  :3gears:

(Had trouble finding that smiley, I thought maybe we had been banned from doing burnouts on the forum?)

hi bomber I think the must have pad for parts so its just machine work that he is owed. the engine was being built when he did mine and I keep saying to him that he was giving me the wrong one. and that I will take it any time. . its been there for 2 years now. as for the diff I think your on to some think potta  he said that head flows 300hp dose that mean that they flow that with the cam they had in mind and would come close to the 300?? with the right bolt ons or just that the head will flow 300
