The diff just blew in my LJ on the way to work. I am pretty sure it was an lsd.

Are they worth rebuilding or is it better to drop in a hilux or similar??

What options are there? I live in NZ so options will be limited any way.

Not sure of ratios or splines till I get here home and stripped.

Sorry to hear that Mike,

I had a 3.08 LSD Banjo that went Bang,

and all it was, was the Axle Spline has twisted off,

just got a  Rod, and Punched out the Broken Piece,

and then Washed out the LSD and as you would the Diff Housing with Petrol.

Needed a New Axle of-course, but the Diff was OK.

The diff just blew in my LJ on the way to work.

If the prognosis is a worst case scenario & she's shot beyond redemption,

-might be worth a check on the local pick-a-part for an Aussie built Skyline B-W diff you can get sorted to suit.

Depending on what let go will determine the outcome, pull the center and have a look and go from there, some one from the this side of ditch

should be able to help out with bits if need be.  :)

Mike,

today i had put a call into harrop about diff centers the GTR and XU1 owners club NSW are looking at a deal with harrop for 5 tru track centers to see if we can get a reduced cost based on volume.

i got a call back after 5.30 and called back, they do 10 , 23 and 28 spline centers.

the straight swap is the 10 spline center and then you change over your crown wheel and pinion onto this center. All you then need is a handful of axles.

if you going to keep long term and give it a thrashing then up spec the center at least to save the re build cost on LSD , once done axles are cheap rather than the center.

three cents and if you want in on a center long term then PM me and i can add to the order and you can put a single spinner in for the time being,.

I'm really unsure of the other diff centers as stated above ( skyline)  , but these will slot straight into the housing and if you want a, 23 or  28 spline then all you have to do in get a set of axles made and it's an non engineered product with no fuss. it may seem a bit expensive but at least there is no mods needed apart from axles if required for a 23 or 28

as usual 3 cents

I haven't had a chance to get the head out tonight, I will fab up a decent puller tomorrow. As soon as I have everything out I will post photo's. Cheers. Much appreciated. It is a 10 spline axle so does that mean it is not LSD?? If so I think someone has welded up the diff. All should be revealed tomorrow.

10 spline and according to the stamp on the front of the diff by the yoke is 3.36. Would that be right? She has a 173 with a 5 speed celica box.

if it skipped around corners then it may be welded or a spool.

for a streeter either is not a nice thing

What am I doing wrong???? Axles are out, center is completely unbolted but I cannot remove it from the housing. It comes out enough to clear the bolts in the housing but that is it. I cannot rotate the center to anywhere that it will release.

Mike,

If there is a piece of axle stuck it the diff it( the diff ) will not come out the front of the housing.

Or when the diff went bang it has a broke piece of diff jamming things up.

May have to take whole housing out and tip it diff pointing straight up so the broken bits fall away and allow you to pull the rest out.

G.

Look through both ends with a torch or a lamp at one end and look from the other end,

to see if you can see something.

Got it out, you can see the pinion with a few munched teeth, the broken pin, the broken piece on the side. Is it rebuild-able??Attached File  20140731_185539 (1).jpg   66.91K   3 downloadsAttached File  20140731_185637.jpg   46.73K   4 downloadsAttached File  20140731_185800.jpg   50.56K   4 downloadsAttached File  20140731_185840.jpg   35.28K   3 downloadsAttached File  20140731_185924.jpg   35.05K   3 downloadsAttached File  20140731_190228.jpg   34.67K   3 downloads

Pinion is stuffed, crown wheel condition???? can't see any damaged teeth but with the bits of munched up metal that would have been floating around the crown wheel may have seen better days, same for the star gears. May be time to look for another diff.

BTW it isn't a LSD.

The rest of the damage. Inside the spider gear bores there is extensive galling from pick up from the pin.Attached File  20140731_211226.jpg   76.68K   3 downloadsAttached File  20140731_211239.jpg   92.92K   3 downloadsAttached File  20140731_211248.jpg   95.48K   3 downloadsAttached File  20140731_211409.jpg   68.06K   3 downloads

That is easier said than done here.

Yeah, I realised it wasn't LSD as soon as I pulled it out.

No teeth missing on the crown wheel but it is well worn.

Based on the wear I think it's been buggered a lot longer than I've owned it.

There's another like on here from NZ who dropped a hilux diff in his lc. That setup required no length modifications and seemed straight forward as far as these things go. If you can find that thread, you are gold.

And yes they are not easy to find, if it's too expensive sort out a complete unbreakable solution

I am not having any luck finding a diff. They seem to be made of unobtanium over here.
