Hi everyone,

The lower control arm on the drivers side has a crack where the ball joint sits. It is on the underside and It looks like it is spot welded on. Any advice is appreciated. Will upload photos asap

Thanks

Dan

Yes it is all.the way to the outer edge, but it's on the section that looks to be a plate on top.

Well the control arm essentially has a a big hole and 4 rivet holes for which to fit the ball join in. If it looks like a plate on top, it sounds like the ball joints mounting bracket, in which case i would drill out the rivets, and fit new ball joints in the front. If not, i don't see why you cant weld it closed?

You have to be careful with this one, last thing you want is to pop out a ball joint. Holden front ends try to pry ball joints apart.

Upper arms have 4 rivet holes for securing the ball joint, lower arms don't.

Thanks for the reply, from that pic it os the bottom one, and the crack is where the four spot welds are. On one side only. I probably think it is safer to just source a new one.

That's just a reinforcement plate. Up to you i suppose, weld it to keep it going then replace it if you find another. Ill guarantee that it wont crack again (in the spot it;s welded)

what you have said is the reason why these were added to the xu1 from the start of the CK xu1 in 1971, this crack and ball joints popping out happend alot in the 1970 bathurst race as the pre 71 bathurst cars never had them.

cheers gong
