I knocked up a small basic heatsink for the one I used. Nothing fancy.

Yes the 3 terminal regs will need a a heatsink , work but very inneficient.

Just go down to jaycar and get one of these Arduino DC interveter boards.

Dial up the 5volts and no heat and handles 2.5amps not 1amp like the 7805.
