Thanks Gene

I just read everything I can on here and try to put give it a go.

You blokes are a wealth of knowledge as most of you have already done heaps of rests, and most of you are happy to help a young fella.

I have been trying to find Dads old GTR or at least find a pic of it for him. Last place I can trace it to is when he sold it to a guy in Bunbury over 25 years ago.

When he sold it it was Brock commodore blue with a V8 and a 4 speed rego GTR 308  All it had on the rego paper was V8 which is a bit strange. He built it when he was 21 Lol.

Wow where has the time gone its been a long time coming but we eventually built a new workshop out the back of the house. A new home so I can get stuck back into the restoration without taking over mums garage.

Thanks Neil, I have no excuses now just need to get welding again I have been scrounging up parts for ages and been learning how to make the repair sections when dad is free. sometimes it seems like two steps forward then three steps back when the fit is not right. In the end I think it is better to take the time and do it the best I can after all I am a sparky not a panel beater lol.

Hi James,

Wow! Can't believe you had room on your suburban block to fit a shed of that size.  That is awesome!

No more excuses for lack of progress, get into it and do the best you can, then do it again better. :-)

Say hi to Steve.

Marty

So after a shit rainy day at work I finished early so was able to spend a few hours working on the car.

The driver’s side A pillar is probably the worst part to fix so I thought I would start there. As you can see from the photos the rust is pretty bad through all layers. The rust was not helped by someone at some stage cutting speaker holes and letting lots of water in.

I managed to get the outer skin off to reveal a very rusted inner panel. As I can not find a donor anywhere I will just try and rebuild the panel and then make the outer this should be fun.

Any suggestions or hints are welcomed from people that have done the job.

You can buy new sections for the hinge area. A guy makes them, I think they come in three parts.  We have his details at the car club.  I can find out more if your interested.

Thanks Marty. I came home today and dad gave me a hand to make a cardboard template which I transferred to some steel. I  have just cut out attempt number one from some plate. The plan is to trial fit it tomorrow and if its ok treat the remains frame and hinges and then slowly tac it in place (trying not to move the hinges)

Well it’s been quite a while since I have had any time to work on the Torana.

I have been busy finishing my apprenticeship and getting my EC and starting my own business.

I hopefully will have more time to finish the project car.

Spent today finishing off both A pillars and dummy fitting doors to check that the repairs have not caused fitting issues.

I want to dummy up the outer sills and front guards before welding them in place.

Taking a break from cutting out rust, making patch panels and welding them in.

I stripped the old bonnet knocked out a few dents and sprayed it with Epotec epoxy. Nice to see a different colour other than rust

Ok one step forward one step back.

I seem to have an issue with the Epotec 408 I applied to the bonnet last week

It has sat in the shed for a week and I have noticed small lumps in the surface.

Bonnet was sanded, deoxidised, wiped with water as per instructions dried prep soled and then painted.

Hoping the paint Gurus can shed some light on why and the best way to resolve.

Ok sanded back the bonnet and re coated with epoxy giving a good 25 mins flash off between coats.

My thinking is either it was a solvent pop issue or the paint and hardener have gone off as the last time I used them both was two years ago.

I will see how it turns out in a week.

Worse comes to worse I guess I will just have to sand it all off again and go and get some new stuff.

Have been meaning to test fit the door, lower sill, front guard and bonnet to see how they fit after replacing the A pillar and inner sill. Not too bad a fit as nothing has been adjusted or welded in place.

The boot is just sitting there at the moment that's why the gap is way out.

Looking good james, keep up the good work, maybe start a thread in "paint n panel" about primer issue, I'm sure some one will have had this problem before or can offer advice. maybe also ring a local paint supply shop and get some advice from them, cheers paul.

It has been a while but the project is still going just very slowly. I have been busy establishing my own sparky business.

I have cut out and replaced the passenger inner sill, outer sill, rear bottom section behind the door and the from floor all on the passenger side.

I have just started cutting out the drivers side and have come across some interesting repairs. 3 layers of patches all on top of the rusted out section of the inner sill.

The drivers side will require the same replacements as above.

I have been test fitting the front guards, doors and front end as I go to tray and keep an eye on how everything is lining up. The plan is to complete both sides from the door back to the quarter panels and all the sills and floors etc and then weld the guards and rad support etc on.  (hope this is the right way as I am a Sparky not a panel beater and this is my first restore)

More work on the car today due to the weather.

Interesting pop riveted and silastic plate "repair" and a strange hole on the transmission tunnel.

Does anyone have the correct dimensions for the size and location of the manual transmission hole

and would anyone know what the strange round hole would be for

James

Hi Gene, Thanks for the advice I will go back through the Marty report i must have missed it when going through it as I reference Marty's work all the times as it is great help. (like all the build forums on here).

As for the hole I guess I will just patch it I was not sure if it was original and had just been enlarged.

James
