The Nasco engine number Nx sequence for HQ GMH engines started at 1001 just like the HQ sequence where LJ engine numbers exist (the only apparent difference being the Nx sequence appears to include LH-UC Torana and VB Commodore which have their own sequences for their original engines). So until the count reached 10000 (later in the 70's) there were 4 x digits after Nx. Earlier JP replacements were obviously fairly low (circa NP2xxx-NP3xxx) but as they were supplied over time they creep up. There appears to be a volume of them around NP7xxx most likely made as replacements for the final spec XU1 engine which was different internally to earlier ones. I guess if you really wanted one you could have purchased an early specification LJ XU1 replacement short engine from GMP&A in the later 70's so if they had to build one (ie not one in stock) it could have be in the form NP1xxxx ie 5 digits. Would be pretty uncommon though as by that time used engines would have been readily available to rebuild.
