Hi,

Firstly a disclaimer I'm a complete novice when it comes to Toranas so if I have stuffed up yell out.

As the title suggests my temp gauge doesn't read anything above 100 deg Fahrenheit. So here's what I know, the sensor reads 114 ohms ( measured from terminal to battery ground) when stone cold and measures 84 ohms after driving for 20 minutes.

I presume that the higher the temp the lower the resistance.

I haven't tried shorting the wire to ground to see if the gauge gives max deflection, but will if someone in the know can confirm that this is how the gauge/sensor works.

My question is what is the expected ohms reading for a cold engine and what is the expected reading for an engine upto operating temp. Also is the sensors linear maybe 1 less ohms equals 2 deg hotter.

Thanks in advance

Cheers Brian

Been through this before. If you are using the tridon sender, bin it. Buy the VDO sender problem solved.

You need to make sure it is VDO. I've gone through this with a tridon engineer and even he couldn't explain it. Call both companies and ask for the temperature gauge resistence values. You will notice that they are very different from eachother. How are two gauges deigned for the same car so different? The other thing is that you will notice the tridon is compatible with just about every bloody holden ever made, how does that work?

Dont go through bursons i dont think they can get VDO, i got mine from a repco. There are different VDO colours i think it was the one with the white ring, but dont take my word for it.

I'm not sure if that's the part number but just tell them its for a GTR XU1 torana as they were the only one to have the gauge. Where about's in melb are you?

Hi Jacob,

Picked up the VDO part from Repco today, it has the white ring and is part number 320-002. I will install and collect a few resistance readings.

BTW thanks for the thought to offer to help. I

m trying to tidy up a couple of small things on the car before the VTC Dam run.

Cheers Brian

Good luck i hope it works. It did with me.

I'd like to make it to this years run as well. Been meaning to for a while but never had a finished car.

I'm not sure if that's the part number but just tell them its for a GTR XU1 torana as they were the only one to have the gauge.

All GTRs also have a temp gauge & it was a regular option on S & SL as well.

IMHO part no. 320.021 is correct for an LC/LJ temp gauge. 320.002 makes the gauge read too high.

320.021 has 62.2 ohms @100ÂșC, while the 320.002 has 38.6 ohms at the same temp.

Hi Terry,

I meant GTR/XU1.

Is the 320.021 a VDO part? What is it listed as being primarily compatible with?

Hi Dr Terry

Here are my readings

Stone cold 74 ohms
140 Fahrenheit 50 ohms
180 Fahrenheit 34 ohms

Btw 180 Fahrenheit is as hot as my gauge got after 20 mins, this is with VDO part 320-002

Had your thermostat opened?

180f is not right. But i guarantee you that the tridon sender is wrong anyway so at least you are on the right track to sorting it. Do you have access to an electronic thermometre to test the rad temps?

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing, the top hose feels a good bit hotter than the bottom ( whilst still hot I'm thinking too much difference )

Maybe pull it out just for testing purposes. Also drilled a few holes in mine.

Resistance values for LC LJ Torana Temperature gauge are:

Cold: 315 ohms

Half: 65-76 ohms

Hot: 18 ohms

Hope this helps.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the readings, what temp sender did you use?

Cheers Brian
