Hey guys,

I am wanting some advise on what diff to put into my LH torana. I have removed the 6 cy and am putting a 308 approx 300hp with a turbo 350auto. I currently have a The original banjo in it as was wondering weather I can keep it and change over the centre with 355gears or do I need to put another diff in it? Trying to save $$.

What is my best option and outcome?

Thanks Ezza

I have the same situation with my LH. The 3.55 gears are fun, but revs a little high for me on long 100kmh drives. A banjo can survive if you treat it well and have small tyres on the back, but I'm upgrading to and recommend upgrading to a BorgWarner LSD. Diff shop quoted me $2400 changeover, you may be able to do it for 1800-2000 if you do the research and buy a cheap skyline R31 diff and find someone who is willing to drill the axles. You may be able to pick up a 3.55 diff centre for cheap and see how it goes. I may have one spare when I do the diff change over, but it wont be for a bit. There may be other cheap 2nd one around too.

Thanks! Still confused! Wen you say don't run large tyres what do you mean by large tyres? What would be the maximum tyre side be?

I hear alot of v8 toranas getting around are running v8 banjos with 3.08 ratios!

The idea is that if you have a non wide tyre on the rear, it will break traction before breaking the diff on take off. I think the only reason why my banjo has lasted was that I was running a 205 width and average tread tyre. But this is speculation...    There are a few 3.55 centres around, you can always try it out if you want the cheap route (doesn't take long to change a centre out) but be prepared if it does break..

Why bother running skinny no grip tyres in a V8 Torana? Kinda defeats the purpose.
I replaced lots of axles and a centre in the banjo in the LX sedan. After all that dicking around and inconvenient tows home I fitted a nine inch that uneventfully served out the next 17 years.

So a 9" into a LH, does it require changing or welding the outside to be able to bolt onto original places? Or will it go in unmodified?

You need to replace the entire assembly with a custom made one. (eg wheel nut to wheel nut)

Ah yes, that's what i meant. Will the whole assy fit without welding stuff on? Or do you buy them already modified. Just wondering if i reco one myself or pay extra and get one to suit.

The majority of genuine ford 9" diffs would've left the factory bolted to leaf springs and fitted with drum brakes, so even if you disregard the width being too wide and them having wrong stud pattern the answer is still no, definitely not a bolt-in replacement item.

Having said that, I'd guess most diff conversions these days would use an aftermarket housing rather than actually converting one out of a ford, but yes you can buy them ready-made, usually with your choice of width, brakes, stud pattern, gearing, centre, etc., etc.

You could do one yourself, but you'd need to make a jig to weld all the attachments in the right place at the right angle and you'd also need the bar and bearing adapters to straighten the housing again after you weld it, so it's not really worth doing for a one-off conversion.

You could buy a bare housing already converted and supply your own centre and brakes, but the axles will need to be shortened as well, so I'd think most people would just buy the diff complete and ready to bolt in, by the time you screw around rebuilding the centre etc. it would probably work out costing the same anyway?

I'm about to replace my Banjo with a VN BW with VL 3.45 gears. I have a spare Banjo round the back, a mate works with his dad in a machine/hot rod shop. I'll remove the brackets off the BW, give both diffs to the shop, they will measure/remove/fit the Banjo brackets to the BW for roughly $400... and probly give it a paint as well, like they did with the new drive shaft.

I was breaking Banjo axles a while back... never broke a head, just wore them out. Fine spline set has lasted for nearly 17 years (as thats how old my daughter is and she was in nappies when I swapped diff bits)

Righto Bigfella, I guess I might as well but one done already then. Thanks for the reply.

Yep been looking on ebay. Seen some range from $2500-$4500 that say they are for LH torana. Just gotta work out the budget and decide on an engine. Contemplating either a RB30ET or LS1.  Decisions decisions.
