Hi guys, curious to see if any of you or your mates have put a Commodore VL dash/consol  in a LH or LX. If so how did it go, and how hard was it. The reason is, I want to put a RB30ET in my LH, and put in a more modern (slightly) dash. The main reason is my first car was a VL Turbo and my second was a LX and I would like to mix the looks together if possible. I know it can be done, as I saw it somewhere about 15 years ago.

Just after some pointers, advice, pics, etc. Thanks!

:)

Commy dashes in Toranas are always butt frOcking ugly and just wrong.

The VL dash is probably the butt frOcking uglyest and most wrong of all commy dashes.

I have never seen a VL dash in a Torana, but i would assume it would be close to the buttest frOckingest uglyest wrongest thing ever to be dreamed up by a human being.

Cheers.

I think if you wanted to modernize the cab a nice uc dash would be a far better option.....

A UC dash in an LH hmmm, well thats gotta be the dumbest idea i've ever heard. If your not on the sauce get off the ice then.

Personally I dont think a VL dash would be a bad option as it is of a similar size, you would just have to marry up the rest of the interior to suit.

Forgot to use the sarcasm font with the UC comment...Though its a much nicer looking dash than a VL one.

Personaly, I think the Torana dash or the HJ 4 guage dash are some of the best dashes Holden have ever done.

I think the VL dash is deeper ? , you will probably end up with knees in the dash .

The VL dash as a bit wider & needs some trimming, but it will fit.

I will hunt for a cheap dash assy, and see how it goes then. Not much to loose.

Thanks judgelj. I know it's really all about what I want as I will be the owner, so I will certainly do it how I want it, as long as it's possible and not beyond my skill. Otherwise I will compromise to suit my ability and budget.

Well Bomber, my plan C is to buy a UC and use its dash etc and stick the RB30ET in, and use my LH as a donor to change front and rear section so it no longer looks like a UC on the outside, but instead looks like a LX. Keep the inside looking like a UC and the engine of a VL Turbo.

Thanks guys. Keep the comments and advice coming.

Just customize it the way you want,if you plan on going "all out" just build a complete new dash with after market instruments, much easier.

Yeah i like how people see the question as 'what is your personal taste', instead of 'can it be done'. You know what they say about opinions.

I have no idea what a VL dash looks like.

That being said, would it be possible to modify a VL cluster, or the gauges themselves to fit in the Torana dash?

Its just a thought.

Looks like you could chop that up easily enough to fit into the Torana dash.

Flat panel with custom gauges would look nicer but hey your car do as you wish

I'm with Yeshua Messiah on this one.

Way back in '98 or '99 Street Machine did a feature on an FC fitted with an RB 30E. The guy had cut the VL instrument panel to fit in the FC fascia. Looked good and would make wiring it up much easier, though I think CAE do a plug in harness anyway.

Would be easy to do the same with a UC dash or with some frigging around an LH / X dash too I guess.

Which just reminded me of something -

He said he took the VL diff and used two standard length short axles and just shortened one side of the housing. Not sure what width that would be but FC rear track is 54.5" or 1384.3mm. He had old school dished mags on it though. I think it was converted to HQ pattern.

A VL Turbo diff would be even better if you happened to trip over one somewhere.

Disregard if this type of swap is ancient Torana folklore.
