Diff info request

I have an early Torana small Salisbury differential in my Jensen Healey which used the UK Vauxhall differential of 1973 which is the same as early Torana. I would like to change the diff ratio from the present 3.727:1 to something near to 3.3:1. I have a gearbox with a lower first gear to get the car away. When I read the discussions on your site there are many knowlegable Holden Torana diff experts who may be able to help a fellow car enthusiast. The questions I have which crownwheel and pinion can I use?

Welcome to the nut house. No Australian Torana diff had 3.7:1 ratio, which doesn't mean they weren't made. The small salisbury has 3.9, 3.55, 3.36, 3.08 and 2.78. I have a crownwheel and pinion here somewhere, so I can take photos and measurements if I find it.

You should have no trouble finding a 3.36 centre. They are a very common 6 cylinder with manual gearbox ratio.
Keep in mind that many 6 cylinder Commodore and WB Holden commercial vehicles were also fitted with the small Salisbury.

The small Salisbury diff in the HB to TA toranas only came out with 3.89 or 4.1 ratios as far as i know . The other small Salisbury that most people talk about is a bit bigger ,( UC toranas and early commodores) which makes it a bit confusing .

Am I correct in saying that this is a pommy diff not manufactured in Australia?
Do the poms have the solution?

Around 10 years ago I saw what looked like an LJ 4 door with 4 headlights. The badge on the back said Vauxhall "something". It also had what looked like HQ GTS style 13" steel rims.

You might need to pull the CW & Pinion & case out and get some dimensions.
You will need the CW ID where it fits on the case and the number of bolts that hold it on,the measurements of pinion length and distance
between bearings or at least the distance between where inner bearing races stop on pinion shaft.
Will also need case dimensions from bearing to bearing face of inner race to inner race from outside to outside.
Probably also need the bearing numbers and the number of splines/diameter the side gears have for the axles.
3.7 to 3.3 is a big step, 336 might be some happy ground (maybe 355) in the middle if the small salisbury or banjo gear comes close.
It is not first gear ratio you should be concerned about,it is all built around what the engine likes at peak torque or just above at 60MPH,different for racing?
The supra w58 had a short 1st,they should have just left it out or ground the teeth off the gears so that it could not be used.
