Been looking and some 6 cylinder red motor blocks I have to see and the engine number pads weather they have paint on them or just raw cast when painted from the factory.

Some have no paint at all and some have half the pad painted like it was masked off and others are painted but assuming that they have been rebuilt.

Just wanting to know if there was any formality back in the day or it was just willy nilly as thousands of these motors cruised through the production line.

The pic is an example of one, any info would be appreciated.

OK,I have come across some more original un rebuild  blocks but are all from Adelaide built cars with the same paint on the edge of the pad.

I have not seen any Brisbane built cars tho.

Can anyone help???

Dane, all engines produced Melbourne and lucky dip as to which engines went to Adelaide and which went to Brisbane so there shouldn't be any difference.

Cheers

Dave.

They weren't too careful, you'll find if there was a mask it often would have fallen off. I've seen a few HK body tags like that, where the mask has come off and they have red lead all over them or black. The mask could be as simple as a piece of magnetic backed material that they drop over the number pad.

In fact in concours judging especially on V8's if you don't have overspray everywhere you should be losing points!

Thanks for the feedback, I know it would have been a slap happy process even with the stamping of the numbers as well.

I think you've answered the question Dave.

Ken interesting to see a silver oil filler cap on that motor in the pic.

Byron with the photos I have seen and got there would of been over spay everywhere, Spark plugs, fuel pump, etc, etc.

I the only thing I have really worried about having over spray on is the bell housing at this stage.

cheers Dane

I thought the same thing about the oil cap, I thought the silver one's started later, but then some other things in the picture distracted me.

It's interesting that you need to do a rough job to get it correct ie. overspray everywhere.
What parts were fitted to the engine at the time of painting?

Most stuff was on there. I have had the process described to me for the imported SBC engines. The engines were complete enough to run on gas, and had flywheel or flex, starter, bellhousing and clutch for manual. They fitted a device that fed gas into where the carb goes. The dizzy was fitted and engine was run and timing set. A mark was placed on both the dizzy and the valley cover (on the SBC it was the valley cover), then dizzy was removed and hole sealed. Then the engine was painted afaik, paint dried and then crated up with its dizzy. Over here they were uncrated, dizzy added and external dress put on (alternator carby, fan etc). The local engines would be a similar process with minor variations.

I am pretty sure the colour in the HD/R X2 in the picture oil filler cap and air filter are gold.

HR X2 Gold air cleaner and gold oil breather cap.

Picture is of a 1966 HR.

Anyhow the reason I posted it was it appears the engine number pad is painted red as there doesn't seem to be any cast areas around there...

That process may have varied along the way as stuff often did. If you look at a late 202 (black in VK or blue in WB) the number pad isn't even machined.

That girl would have to be about 65 by now? I wonder where her boobs are hanging now?

Yeah, my old eyes seem to be playing tricks on me too.

Her boobs won't be hanging anywhere, her belly will be holding them up.
