Hope you guys with the old tyres are very very careful when you go out.

Reports on old tyre failure seem to be on the rise in the media.

Would also check fine print with insurance companies etc in case you need to claim

yer have heard abit, was abit worried doing a 4hr highway trip with my 15yr old retreads on the back but they survived :) there in the shed now

Mine's ok, pretty tail happy. Yokohama AVS tyres go well, but they're getting a bit old now.

Changing wheel and tyre size soon and will be limited choice in fat 15in rubber... This thread is an interesting insight into the quality of rubber available. A bit worrying actually.

Rubber has a "shelf life" , it is hard to tell just from tread pattern, sometimes the shitty looking "closed" pattern is better than an "open" pattern.

The 509 had an open pattern but a soft compound, same as some Bridgy..and others,,all things being equal an open pattern with soft compound should be "ok" or better given the way water behaves when an un-compressible fluid is at work.

But then sometimes they surprise you with something.

The fingernail test is good...if you dig a fingernail into the tread and the "nail print"  stays for a while (not long)..good.

Twist the tread...if it is easy to twist and pliable..good.

open pattern with these traits should be good in the dry and wet ?...that's what i have found anyway.

The Firestones I've recently removed still had heaps of tread, the 'thumbnail' test showed they were rockhard, exactly why they didn't hang on even in the dry!

Bloody horrible, light LC, hardly any weight over the back wheels. Have to drive like grand pa, especially with hoon laws in QLD.

On the other hand in my little Celica ST 204, doesn't even relise that its wet.

Regards.

What tyres are you running now days, as i am searching for 215/50/13 if that is possible, rather not have 205 60 13 and not sure if 225 60 will fit under stanard gaurds, i have standard front end

just a short while after i bought my hatch in 1985

i got bored late one saturday night

so head out for a drive

just as bought worn out yokohama 352,s on 8 in magnum rims allround

and raining

best night !

sideways off every traffic light and every corner was out loose but so predictable

so much fun i could just hold it sideways on the throttle

with little or no fishtailing

until the blue and red lights came on

was turning from newcastle st into fitzgerald st in northbridge

can still remember it like it was yesterday

managed to talk my way out of a ticket

pleaded it was the first time i had driven the car in the rain

and that was the truth

and yes i was very apologetic to the officers at the time

when they let me off and told me to slow down and take it easy

even with near bald rear tyres

i was very thankful

and when i drove off laughing my ass off

what a night !

what a car!

Mine doesn't leak at all but the Bridgestone Eagers aren't the best tyre in the wet

Driven tubbed sle in rain couple of times...front runners & 15x10/305/50 rears,it's not bad although not type of car to be silly with on wet road...does occasionally bite back like break loose light throttle 2k rpm/60 km/h to give a scare.

The lc gtr & vy ss ute were more fun & controllable in wet both being manual v8 lol

Running on 155 concrete cutters with a 4.2ltr and LSD is pretty interesting and quiet often a white knuckles ride even trying to drive smoothly lol
