In both front floor pans and also in the floor of the rear hatch there are small holes about 3-4mm that have a big blob of the black seam sealer on them to cover the hole. In the front they are in the bottom of the pressed groove. Anyone know why they are there? Wondering whether to leave them and cover with a new blob of sealer or weld them up and get rid of them

Those holes will be to allow the primer to drain out of the floor pans after dipping the body shell in black primer to just above the top door hinge line.

Makes sense as they are in pressed groove. Might just weld them up then.

At Paewood these were put in Monaro bodies to let water drain out while the bodies in white (whatever the white protectant was on them) were out in the weather waiting for a Monaro shift.

Bodies in white were so called because of the white primer.

Not 100% the case afaik. It was a whitish protectant to protect the bare steel before it went through the paint process which started with the body dip. I dob't know if all cars got it but those welded together that waited for Saturday or overtime shifts to complete them did. It was how the last 600-ish HJ cpupe bodies were stored from late in 1975 to when they were converted to HX's in later 1976.

The only process that I know of that GMH used on bare steel prior to painting was the passive zinc phosphate process used to clean & protect the bare metal prior to the painting process.

Replacement 'Bodies in White' were supplied coated in white primer. That is the reason they were nicknamed 'Bodies in White'.

Would you believe I was on my back staring up at my floor pan the other day and couldn't figure out what these holes were, now I know!
