It's a red 202ci high compression (9.4:1) six cylinder from the LJ Torana series.

Just out of interest, what are the cast date and first few engine numbers?

So it's JL341x (4 digits) or JL341xx (5 digits)?

And down on the driver's side of the engine block at the back there should be a date code (cast not stamped) that should have one or two numbers (for the day) followed by a letter (the month) concluded with another number (the year), it looks something like "15B3" which would be the 15th of Feb '73.

Comparing the cast date with the engine number can often tell you whether something might have been messed with, not likely in your case but I'm just curious.

EDIT: Sorry I forgot to mention there will also be a clock face after it with a pointer pointing to the time of day when the casting was made.

Thanks Dave, I assumed the JL series would have started at JL1001 like the others?

By the time the LJ Torana series was released and the LJ GTR & XU1 started receiving 202 JL & JP blocks the HQ engine number sequence would have been approaching 6digits.

The OP's Torana is an SL, so if JL341XXX is its original engine then this SL Torana has to be a 1973 build and would have been produced somewhere around May 1973.

JL 363xxx is late June 73, so may 73 sounds about right for this engine.

(is there a cast date behind the alternator?)

Got no idea how many JL 202's were produced but I'll take a stab at eight thousand units.
