The ebay link you provided for the paint is acrylic not 2pac. Since you have to pick it up from McIntyre Rd, I suggest also trying Olarenshaw's Paint Centre on Devonshire Rd. They will supply 4lt of HiChem 2Pac basecoat colour (bit better than motospray) for approx $365 from memory. 2pac thinners is $35-40 for 4lt. They have a 5lt clear kit for $165 which includes hardener. All this adds up a bit cheaper than 700 and is 2pac instead of acrylic. Of course depends on what path you are taking. I have used the HiChem 2K products for a long while on a lot of jobs and have never had any issues/comebacks. Still see some cars today and look great.

gmh,

am doing 2K. (bad link/research.)

i did my chilli el xr6 myself in acrylic and did a good enough job. was first and only time painting a car,. so did easier acrylic.

feeling brave (or stupid), but am going to tackle the 2k myself.. (to save 3 or 4grand i do NOT have.)

thankyou for the heads up on better price/location on tested paint :)

(hmm. think i may of been a tad ripped off where i went for the acylic appears! boo!! saw me coming, did.)

Firstly, ultra blue is an awesome colour and was on my short list of colours.
Having just finished a project (this week), paint and panel was the worst of it. Sounds like you have an understanding what you're in for.
I think 8k + is more likely with all of those hidden extras and expensive Torana parts... Do those rotors work without hubs etc? Ie. the factory rotors have bearing races pressed in.
Best of luck.

ollie,

what's a hub?

(um, so,

best i be triple asking before purchasing anything, reckons!! Assume and buy, not good.)

am new to site, but have just been learning my way around, so now can actually find correct threads to pretty much all answers i seek. awesome site, and generosity of knowledge i see.

On a conventional car a hub is what the brake rotor sits on. It houses the bearings and studs.
On a lh/lx Torana the brake rotor is the hub (ie. those rotors you want to buy don't have a place to sit the bearings/studs in by the looks of them)
See the fitting hq in the pinned section of brakes for images to visualise it)

the brake rotor IS the hub.

second piece of lackluster knowledge of mine to note is..

da dah!..i wouldn't of even thought that was possible.

haven't really had a good look at the car have i, and i sure don't know cars/toranas.*

(went on ebay, bought cross drilled rotors for my el, took it to mechanics, said chuck these on when lowering it, wallah, easy.

..so, was gonna do the same for these rotors. thanks for the heads up :) )

*what i have been taught about cars, ive forgotton. memory like a sieve, bought and paid for.

cheers ollie,

will look at hq fitting to see the setup.

+1...

Welcome mate. I am also doing a budget build, but think long and hard about what to buy cheap and what to just save up for. Starter motors for instance - I wouldn't buy a cheap one as they need to be reliable. Same with brakes ( I saved for Hoppers Stoppers) and paint prep products (good quality epoxy primer, excellent plastic filler, etc).

I went cheap/second hand on stuff I can clean up/refurbish myself with some commitment and time.

You want the car reliable. I did, anyway. Google Pro Comp. :-) good luck with the build, I look forward to seeing it progress.

cheers fellers :)

i have to buy "cheap" everything, where possible.

re:

Before buying any procomp/atracing i would do a search on the quality of their products.  ;)

tried to research them, found various complaints about refunds/quality.

so, not seeming great.

question:

with a cheap starter motor, it just wont run, but doesn't wreck the engine. right?

also, has anyone tried/tested any of these to recommend?

http://www.ebay.com....&_udlo=70&_udhi

------------------------------

which leads me to..

question: with a dizzy if it fails does the engine stop or can/does it ruin the engine?

??

(as bad as it sounds, with some items i don't mind if if lasts a year or three and then i just chuck another, IF just stops, not ruins the engine of course;    ..if it means i get to drive the car soon! in six months a can just upgrade if need)

Good luck with the build, and ask plenty of questions. We all started somewhere.

Cheap items can be just that. Most external parts, if they fail, won't cause any internal issues. But, if they let you down, then your stuck trying to work out how to get you and the car home. This can and will get expensive. better off paying more from the start, it will end up cheaper

I understand wanting to get out and about as soon as possible, but as most people will tell you, budgets and time lines will blow out, so be ready for the disappointment. But in the long run, the money and time is worth it when you take it for its first drive. Nothing beats the self satisfaction knowing that you built it yourself.

The car your looking at replicating is not a cheap build, so good luck again :)

Oh Blythe way, I do know someone that did buy one of those dizzy's, it didn't spark. Total waste of money, and he didn't get any back either. It went the bin! That was for a 6 cylinder though

hmm, might just stick to second hand or reco originals for now LS2.

seems the prevailing notion (unless new becomes an option, not likely as yet monetarywise.)

is all starting to (seriously) add up and might just take a tad longer to complete than i initially hoped ;) (words spoken before round here i suspect.)

That blue is a great colour.

I used one of those wiring looms on my LX motor.

I got it with the idle solenoid wire. (pink I think it is)

I have the idle solenoid and bracket under the house and plan to put it on one day

but the car still runs none the less.

There is a plug that ends up on the left side of the carby for another solenoid that I think was on the

rear right of the 77 LX's. did not worry me at all as I think that may have been part of all the pollution set up.

So the short answer is that with or without the idle wire it will work. Some one might enlighten both of us and explain

exactly what that solenoid does?

good luck with the build.

steve

If you are going to use 2 pak, bare in mind that 2 pak doesn't dry as quickly as acrylic so you will need a good garage to keep as dust and, pain in the arse bug, free. What about giving a standard starter a good clean up and invest more money into your ignition. A terrific project, enjoy.

firstly,

don't laugh, ..and you would laugh if i sent a pic of my 'garage' [read ' open walled rusted cattle shed'],

but, due to not acrylic painting my xr6el in a shed but instead out in the open (yup. guess.)... i am next time "investing" in one of those erectable 3m x 6m party/gazebo/car tents  to (seal, and carpet and then ) paint in.

secondly, re: standard starter a good clean up

that seems to be the general concensus, but, don't know what to look for and what clean up involves?

thoughts/links

and..

"invest more money into your ignition."

like what type/way/brand???

:)

Well get your self a factory workshop manual and they will have an exploded view of everything thats inside the starter. Pull it apart and sand off and clean anything that is rusty, dirty and greasy and reassemble. Play around with it, gain some experience and get better at doing things yourself. Try the web for info on rebuilding a starter. If you completly stuff a standard starter, so what, get another and try again. As for the ignition you will find the the standard ignition is probadly OK for a mild engine, try ICE ignition, might be a bit savage on the budget but I'm sure they will give good advice. Be careful of cheap crap on ebay. There is always a latter model up grade. Heaps of early holden sixes upgraded to the electronic distributors out of commodores surely there must be something for a 253/308. hope that helps.

Regards.

Hey man, great to see someone with the genuine naivety on rebuilding cars.

I too was once like you, young, keen, full of ideas and dream to have a cheap affordable hatch driving around in a couple of years.

15 years later, 2 plastic Tupperware containers ( that could hold your spaghetti bags in ) compressed full of receipts, countless god damn hours looking at it and almost as many working on it

and still only really have it to the point of engine and box built, Body finished in colour ( empress black of course in 2pac Spies Heckler ) prepped by me top coated in a pro booth for 3.5k.

If you want a tough good looking car I think you need to drop the A.D.D. mentality and really watch and learn from some of the pros around here. I still sit back in awe of some of the guys work here. Totally blows me away with just the standard " street car" builds have risen too. Truly some are works of art and done on reasonable budgets. Some almost make me want to sell mine because I'm just that much of a fussy prick too.

Put the right feelers out and you may even get help from some forum members with some spare time to see another beast rise up from the ashes..

There's an old saying, Plan thrice...cut once.

good luck dood

I tried to keep my Torana on the road the way you have described with cheap bits to keep going and trust me it's not worth it. Cost me three times as much by trying to keep it cheap.

It's also a good idea to start with small goals that are easily worked towards.

As for all the motor bits and so forth get it running if possible then worry about the rest later. Personally I would start with rust repairs and body work then suspension.

Again if it's a really tight budget why not paint the motor, kit though the carby and general matinee then use it as is until you can build something better. Same goes for the interior only replace what you need too and give it a proper going over after the rest of the work is done. Just something to think about.
