HA ,

  • Col just got home and sort of unpacked - that was the best weekend so far !
  • got eaten to death by mozzies and slept in the car the first night
  • destroyed a castor arm rubber
  • #@$^%& the brakes - no pads left
  • found out I have worn ball joints
  • Repco had a set of nolethane bushes
  • replaced the pads - note to self never use standard pads in a race car !
  • cooked the pads
  • Raced in full rain - COL that tru trac diff is certainly better that a CIG locker in the wet !! HA - you drove away i had nothing !
  • Sent the kids to coles whilst Dogy and Col and me were having a beer - they returned with 1.5K of bacon and 12 eggs - and no lollies and the chick let them off $3.50 HA ! pretty funny
  • the kids locked the keys in the car with the eggs - so only bacon sandwiches until the car was unlocked by nrma !
  • Wayne 2 ELCS bought down some other pads to put in - cheers wayne for that
  • found out I had a broken accerelator arm and only 2 carbies operating
  • replaced the arm - put new pads in and ran 1.14.1- stoked

TOP weekend.

No worries. Yup Graeme is meticulous with all his cars. You should have seen his hatch when he had it.

I was nearly going to take Yella today as well, that would have flushed you lot out!!!

Unfortunately road works between home and the track, so that was a major disincentive.

Had a fantastic 3 days driving the Torana at Wakefield Park with Agent 34 and RallyRed. I have a bit to learn to match their pace, but that didn't keep a massive grin off my face for the whole time.

The weekend was run by the Historic Sports & Racing Car Association. It was very well organised, ran to schedule, the people were friendly and there was plenty of great racing and special cars to look at to fill in any spare time!

The three of us competed in Regularity. We had private practice on Friday, then a practice session and 4 events over the weekend. Regularity is a trial of consistency and requirements for car eligibility and driver apparel are less than for the racing classes. You nominate a time you think you can consistently lap in, and points are added for every tenth over or under your nominated time. The idea being that the most consistent driver accumulates the least number of points. There is a big difference in nominated times across the field and with 27 cars on track, and everyone trying their hardest it makes for a very enjoyable drive!! By way of example, Agent 34 was within 5 seconds of the Group Nc lap record for a Torana XU-1, and his car is a long way short of a race car - so he was having a real go!

For any of you out there with a Torana (or any car for that matter) that you would like to give a run on a race track - then come along and give Regularity a go. There was a total of 6 LC/LJ Toranas  competing in Regularity over the weekend - other marques included Lotus, Austin Healey, MG, Porsche, Capri, Sunbeam, Morgan, Jaguar, Cooper S.

Over the weekend many people came up and said hello and asked about my car and told stories about their Torana's both past and present. It was great to meet you all, I'm guessing many of you are Forum members.

Here are some on-track photos taken by a forum member who forwarded them to me. Thanks Dennis, it was great to meet you and Lyn.

It's F0cking ridiculous fun.

Pat you can go as fast or as slow as you want most of the guys give plenty of room and really stay away from each other. there are plenty of " left or right " hand signals to tell you which way to pass when coming up to them.

go on Col -NC, NC, NC .NC ,NC  even if we run at the back of the pack at least we did it.

brakes are off mine at the shop it's getting the volvo four spot conversion.

Could you even see some of those cars beside you, some of them weren't that high in total off the ground?  I know I could hardly see a Formula Ford when it was on the track with me.

Same - I need to sort my braking issues. I am fitting new discs, new pads & new wheel bearings. I had the booster tested on Monday - all good.

A Signature swaybar has been ordered.

Col, I'd be interested in your choice? I ended us with another set of Bendix Ultimate. Bendix also have a Race pad, but at over $300 from the local Auto One that was a little exy for my budget!

good question ....but I don't have an exact answer......

The pads in the car were in it when I got it.

Pads in the car  are for the car's standard Torana brakes.....pads are HAWK HB169.....however.....they make 5 different compounds, so I'm advised.

Tuned to suit application you plan to subject them to.

From what I can see on the pad....and from what 2 separate suppiers have told me , once you throw the box away, there is no way to tell what the pad in the car is!.

i.e. the compound is not identified on the pad, in any way....except maybe slight colour variations of the actual friction material.

Some suppliers only hold 3 types , others seem to hold all 5.

I am absolutely happy with the ones I have, and just want to replace like with like.....but hey.....its not that easy is it?...all part of the learnin' I guess.

Here is today's reply from a supplier ( seems to be a good guy, knows his stuff) -

p.s. - I recall discussing this with Wayne 2ELCS once and he seemed pretty happy with his ( different) pads.

Col

mmmm........another set of variables in a very long list of variables! Like you, I was happy to continue using the same pads as the previous owner. My braking issues are not to do with pads as such - the problem is a long pedal. But I'm hopeful that will be solved with new discs.
