Hi Ken,

AFAIK All GTR rocker covers should be chromed.

From the June 1975 parts book:

COVER - Valve rocker

Cover - Valve Rocker (Chrome) 3300 Eng 9928698 (Prior to A.D.R 27)

Cover - Valve Rocker (Chrome) 3300 Eng 9932267 (With A.D.R 27)

Someone on the forum with an earlier parts book should have the details of the 72 rocker cover

TRANSFER - Valve rocker cover

Transfer - Engine capacity identification 3300 Eng 9.4:1 2822079

Transfer - Plain, front 3300 exc XU1 Eng 2822082

Transfer - Plain, rear 3300 exc XU1 Eng 2822760

So the 3300 engine cars had a three piece rocker cover decal, front middle & rear (see attached pic of repro decal)

This three piece decal set would not have fit the ADR27 rocker cover, as it had 3 holes in top so it would have needed a 4 piece decal set.

There are no part numbers in the manual referring to ADR27 transfers.

I doubt Holden would have bothered making special decals for the very short run of GTR's past october 73, but would be happy to be proved wrong.

Cheers Kev

All 82911 model rocker covers are chromed.

The Feb 72 LJ parts catalogue lists the same part numbers as the June 75 catalogue for the 3300 eng rocker cover decals.

So if all 82911 covers are chromed what about a factory gtr spec S models, would that be chrome or red? Unfortunately the previous owner of mine had already made modifications and can't remember what it used to be like. I know there's a few people who have owned similar cars out there who may have an idea.

I expect any S or SL model with a factory fitted 202 would have had a painted rocker cover regardless of the car having a few GTR type options. Playing the options game with an S model doesn't make it a GTR, just made it cheaper to insure than a GTR.

I'm just wondering to what extent were gtr type parts likely to have been used. I'm definitely not claiming that it makes it a gtr. That's correct about the cheaper insurance.

Well the JL prefix 202 installed into a GTR is no different to a JL prefix 202 installed into a Torana S, with the exception of the rocker cover and the air cleaner assy (prior to ADR 27). So I don't see any reason why an S model would automatically receive the GTR chrome engine parts just because one had the dealer tick the option boxes for L20 '3300' engine (disc front brakes mandatory with L20), M20 4spd gearbox, 5.5 x 13 road wheels and sports instruments.

I have a JL prefix 202 at home, it came out of a 9/73 4 door S with 3 speed manual transmission and front disc brakes.

It was an unmolested car, with only 121,000 genuine kms, still has original paint on engine, you can just see what's left of the 3300 decal on the rocker cover. It had a standard black snorkel air cleaner as well.

No GTR style options though, it had 4.5 standard wheels and standard dash etc.

Correct, although your GTR was built to comply with ADR 27 it will not have 27 stamped on the Compliance Plate as ADR 27 was not mandatory under legislation until 01/01/1974.

I noticed that the engine pictured above has a silver oil cap and not a black one, there's some threads about that matter on the forum somewhere.

That engine was not out of a GTR so I suspect the oil breather cap was black originally.
