i am about to rebuild my steering column and replace my steering uni as it is a bit tight,

my question is why do some run a twin uni set up with no rag joint?

what are the pros and cons  of twin unis vs 1 uni and a rag joint?

should i put in 2 uni's?

Engine bay space when running extractors etc. For the LS conversion this is a must.

It also tightens up the feel when driving. In my car it's very direct and you can feel every bump, change of road camber etc. kind of like a go cart 😊

The rag is there to dampen the feel and make it more comfortable. Horses for courses....I certainly like it without the rag - others will disagree I'm sure. Lol

I reckon its still better to run the original rag joint, but it must be in good condition. I see so many buggered rag joint and by just replacing the coupling with a new one makes it fell like a new car again.  Just make sure or modify your exhaust to clear the joint rather than trying to make your Torana clear it if clearance is you issue.

Cheers thanks for the reply guys.
Is there any problems in not having a rag joint.? Is there any mods needed to run twin uni's?

I know what your saying Kev, but my hatch is running 1"7/8 extractors and clears by an 1"1/2 it's just a matter of using the right people to do your extractors/exhaust. I use Windsor exhausts who I have been using for 25 years, always do a fantastic job at a very reasonable price. Its quicker and much easier to just get the car to them by a tilt tray($150) let them do their stuff, and I don't have to bugger around trying to make things up or compromise in any way.

Go to the Suspension & Steering forum area, and look for a pinned topic called "Double Knuckle conversion" that I started. It's only a few threads from the top. Has some photos and handy info.

Some good info there LXCHEV

I have 2" extractors being made up ....yes I know there big and yes big plans to come down the track motor wise and it was a requirement by the engineer to have a heat shield around the rag joint and he was clearly leaning to the double D joint set up
so it was a win win case of ease of fitment and engineers requirements as I am doing a more retro style build with all the good gear ....

The rag joint is only used to stop vibration from the road being transmitted through the steering column. The rag joint is not used for a direction change in the steering shaft so in theory you could just replace the rubber disc with a steel plate.

2 uni`s work great, good feel.

using a file will need to take off a few mm`s or else the centre shaft binds up in one of the uni`s, 10mins work

ls2lxhatch makes an excellent point. The "rag joint" (or whatever synthetic they use now) is only to eliminate vibration. If you want the "direct feel" of a solid joint then you could use a steel disc in place of the synthetic. IIRC, the double-knuckle conversion requires shortening one of the shafts - which means no way to undo it without getting a replacement. A steel disc would be a low-cost, no-risk option that could easily be changed back if you didn't like the result.

has anyone ever put a steel disc in theres?

is it curtain that the rag joint doesn't allow for some flex?
