If the car was a 4 cyl manual, the floor cut out is different to 6 cyl/V8 floor shift. You might need to make up a cover plate depending on where your shifter comes to.

I'm looking for a ford 6 cyl T5 for myself. I've been told that the EA T5 boxes have the best ratios and are different ratios to the EB onwards. Is this correct? Anyone now how to tell the difference between the boxes. Everyone selling them advertises them for a EA, EB, EF, EL

There was a difference in the syncro arrangement on reverse EB on wards.

Would these gearboxes be strong enough for a 308 stroked to 355 with around 350+ hp? I was looking at a tko600. Not meaning to hijack the thread, just curious.

Cheers

Depends of course, but IMO not worth frOcking around, just go TKO and know it will be decent to begin with and have a little breathing room incase you add more horses later.

Falcon T5s as mentioned are supposedly the strongest version of the BW trans floating around. The one's behind GM 5 litres don't seem to last long behind standard stroke motors. And they are thin on the ground / fairly expensive to find or rebuild or both. Supra boxes are in the same boat but cost 2 - 3 times more and probably would last 2 - 3 times longer, depending on driving style yeh.

Other options are a 4 speed like the Top Loader. Supposed to be solid and they hang together between worked / stroked 351s and 9" diffs. I think they are originally a truck gearbox, like the 9" which started out in trucks also.  Apparently Tremecs / TKOs are a similar design to these, just with an overdrive gear added (5th obviously). BW Super T10 or whatever it is, I have heard good things. Also Walkinshaw T5s if you can find one, and basically anything built in Japan such as Toyota 5 speeds (Celica, Supra etc) and Nissan 5 speeds (R33 Skyline, VL Turbo)

IMO aussie 4 speed M21s or whatever, Getrags and all automatics are frOcking shithouse.

PPG make straight cut gear sets for things like the R33 / VL turbo 5 speed and last time I checked they actually listed T5s as well. So you can upgrade & strengthen a T5, but of course the cost is about 3k just for the first 4 gears and so you are back where you started, thinking hmm TKO is sweet but FFS so expensive. Seems to end up about the same as a strengthened whatever would cost, but drive-ability doesn't change. With straight cuts you need to adjust the way you drive. I imagine in a similar to a spool, it's different but heaps better for the task once you get used to it.

^ These are just my notes and thoughts. Different things work in different ways for different people. It's an expensive decision to nut out, and potentially upsetting if things blow up when they weren't meant to. Plenty of people run a T5 behind mild 308s / 304s without dramas. The T-56 6spd is another option I nearly forgot, they live behind LS1s etc. but yeh, big and heavy and often require mods to the trans tunnel in a Torana. No great advantage far as I can tell, and cost is still up there with TKOs. 6th gear is another overdrive so you can get away with crazy (er) diff gears but still cruise at a reasonable / low RPM on the FWY / HWY. You can also wander off the deep end and look at US shit like the Jericho (or whatever it is) and Doug Nash 5 speeds (are they different? I'm not sure) but yeh, they are in the deep end of the price pool/s and afaik intended as race boxes, straight cuts aka dog engagement and would take some getting used to. Howard Bell runs something like this in Litre 8, if I am not mistaken.

If you want a T5 then yeh, the Falc ones are often mentioned as the one to grab. EF / EL XR6, I have not done much research myself because I want to run a 383 and TKO 600 with a locked BW diff.
