Hi,

I am thinking of buying a DIY extractor kit for my LS1 conversion.

It has 2 flange plates and 30 assorted bends to make a set of 4-1 extractors, it comes in 409 stainless and I thought as I only have a simple mig I should do it in mild steel but have been told I can use my mig as I would use it on mild steel to weld the 409 as it will bleed into the wire and be fine.

Any thoughts from you welding guys?

If it works I think it is an achievable task but I am a bit surprised to use a mild steel mig setup

Cheers, Tom

Every muffler shop I've ever been in uses the same MIG for mild and stainless exhausts, some paint the welds afterward to stop 'em rusting, some don't.

If it were me, I'd be saving my money and getting the mild steel kit, then spend what you saved on ceramic coating? The coating will look almost as good as stainless and will help keep engine bay temps down, plus the inside of the pipes get coated as well. In theory, ceramic coated mild steel should last just as long as stainless?

There again, if money is no object, buy the stainless kit and then get that coated!

I concur

Got mild and save some money for coating

409 is a shit grade stainless thats about all that can be easily bent for the exhaust industry (cheaply and easily)

It will still turn brown fairly fast

So best just go with the mild and coating

you can weld stainless fine with a mig with stainless wire. just use straight argon gas, not argoshield

as above though, 409 is not thes best quality stainless,

i done all mig with the mig but its 304 stainless.

If you use 316 for exhausts it will eventually crack next to the welds.

Yep, stainless welds does crack from vibration, but I would of thought an exhaust would of been OK.

Its the constant expansion and contraction from the heat that does it.

316 is pretty hard and doesn't like it.

321 stainless is the way to go but 304 seems to be what many use for non turbo stuff
