Does anyone know what the correct casting date would be on an Opel box fitted to 8/70 XU1.I assume the box had to be imported ? So what was the time frame of building & fitting?

From what I can tell, about 2 to 3 months ahead, but others may have different info. I think they came from the Phillipines, so the journey to get here shouldn't have been too long.

I don't think it matters all that much what the cast date is, no-one will see it and it will more than likely break more than once! I'd just buy the best one you can and others for spares.

Finding a good serviceable Opel 4 spd is hard enough these days let alone one with the right cast date.

I honestly have never had issues with an Opel in a Torana. I hammered my first LC XU1 back in 81 as a 17 year old, and the gearbox wasn't an issue. My current one, though doesn't get hammered, has been absolutely fine, though it was rebuilt by one of the best.

The shift knob as well. They are unobtainium these days.....

Mine has 6/70 built Opel that I had rebuilt a while ago,I like the Opel with the 186, ratios seem good.I was just curious about the dates as it's not a local made part and there's not many left to compare . Is there any 8/70 XU1 owners that know what date code is on their Opel.?

MMMM.. just checked the gear box.. Looks like it was replaced as its dated 15/9/70 for a 5/70 car?

I thought you got one from The USA?

I bought one that a few people on the forum suggested. Unfortunately, it looks ok, but is not really close to the real thing. It is much larger and the script is wrong. I have an original one that I have managed to get looking ok, but it is a bit daggy. There is a bloke in Adelaide with a few of them, but none are for sale....

Unless they are concours i'd be sticking your Opels on the shelf and changing to Aussie 4spd. At least you have that option with an LC, with a HK-HG GTS the only GMH manual box that fits easily without floor surgery is an M15 3spd.

I might have to double check my own Opel build date,it might actually be 7/70 ? Been a while since I looked,
The Opel shift knob is hard to find, I bougt a few secondhand complete shifts trying to get a good one & eventually a NOS one come up on a certain website,couldn't believe it & it went fairly cheap, then another come up a few days later.That was about 6 or 7 yrs ago, haven't seen any since.The lettering can easily wear off them unfortunately

Most blokes I know with LC XU1's want them factory correct, and hence why they are refitting the Opel, just as most owners of any of these types of cars want them factory correct.....My mates with E38's are now paying huge dollars for genuine 6 pack 3 speeds (between $5K and $10K). It is all part of the 'hobby'.

I get that, but still if you are paying that much for a box i'd be shelving it and using an alternative, unless you are showing it for judging. There should still be a fair few HK-HG Opel boxes around too to use if you didn't want to break a Torana's original box, most blokes don't bother refitting 186S and Opels they just whack in a V8 and the cars don't really lose any value (probably increase in many cases).
