A mate of mine owns an XY with a 302 and 4 speed. The thing has been running like a dog for years, I put it down to being a Ford lol. Anyhow, ol' mate bought himself an aftermarket HEI dizzy and coil (not poo comp) a few years ago and finally fitted them last weekend.

I get a phone call asking how the wiring should hook up to the coil. I talk him through it aided by the install instructions he has with the new dissy. Ol' mate revealed that his points dissy setup had the wires from the ignition switch connected to the coil negative and the wire from the points & condenser connected to the coil positive.

Is that wiring configuration correct for a Ford points distributor? and will a 1970's Holden V8 or 6cyl run if the coil was connected the wrong way around?

Cheers

Dave.

You'd think it wouldnt matter. It's just the primary winding of a coil at the end of the day. The points are just providing a current path to ground when closed. So really it shouldn't matter.

Thanks Brad.

Ol' mates father looked up his Ford shop manual and told him the way his points coil was wired up was correct.

I won't tell him is father should have put his glasses on. :)

Cheers

Dave.

original wiring has a resister wire from ignition to coil no good for electronic dizzy,as it needs full 12volt,resistor wire drops it to around 7 volts

Yeah thanks Nick, I advised ol' mate of the high probability of the voltage reduction for points dizzy and the need to feed the HEI 12volts.

He has tested and found the ignition is supplying 12 volts to the coil at CRANK and ignition ON.

Seems the resistance wire must have been bypassed by the previous owner.
