Looking at trying to set up a low oil pressure light on the race car and have sort of an  idea, but as usual no hard facts to follow through with.

I am thinking that there must be a " pressure switch " which is attached to a mechanical line off the side of the block.

you would need an extender and then a T junction - one line goes to the gauge and the other line links directly to a " switch " which intern runs to a light ?

Can anyone shed some light on how this might work and also parts needed.

thanks

G

Any SL Torana comes standard with a low oil pressure switch, and the idiot light in the dash.

thanks  for the input, i now understand.

buy a standard oil pressure switch Hq,, LC , etc in stall and run a wire off the cluster dash for power.

cheers Dave Spac for the phone call - it seems pretty easy.

it should be called the " oh F0ck light"

An oil pressure switch earths-out the terminal when there's no oil pressure, so you would supply IGN+ to one side of the bulb and earth the other side through the oil pressure switch.

On a race car I'd fit a big bright red light on the dash somewhere and not go near the cluster at all.

Yeah I bought an off the shelf Autometer low oil pressure warning light. You can buy slim ones or larger ones. Come with sender, so you just need to sort out a t piece to fit it in. Warning lights are great investments in my opinion, because seriously how many of us are actually watching our guages whilst racing or giving them a hard time. A warning light will get your attention - although the damage is probably done by then anyway, but at least you might shut it off in time to save destroying a whole engine.

THats why I got the 20psi on sender....

Sure it might flicker or downright be on during round town or sitting at lights situations, but so long as the bastards out when im under it I dont care.

Cheers.

It's a switch DJ, not a sender.

I had a mate who instead of using a low pressure light used a buzzer, don't know if it would be annoying or not but it would get your attention.

Edit. I'd expect it could be annoying when you turn the ignition on and when cranking over untill engine builds up oil presssure

Or if you have an engine that likes to drop down to frOck all at idle....and considering it would have to be frOcking loud to hear it when it matters....

Having spoken to Grant, he wants the warning light for situations where oil pressure could be lost during race conditions, so a buzzer may not be heard when punting it hard around a corner or WOT throttle down the straight for example.

And mount it next to the drivers seat at head height :)

Rotaries have a buzzer on the tachometer in about rx4 for those that can't remember. I personally think that the auto meter pencil warning light would be best + you can fit the coloured cover for night time driving just my opinion though, Gary.

Forget a buzzer, unless it is going to be in airconditioned comfort, just an "idiot light" of sorts that is easily visible in parallel with pressure thingy as per a previous reply,i could be wrong but i have a vague memory of some type of "switch" that would cut ign. if low oil pressure was present? ,of course it did not mean the engine was saved but when the light came on the ign. was cut and time to find the clutch or neutral gear when the red light came on?

THat would be easy enough with a normaly closed relay switched by the wire feeding the light and in line with the ignition switch wouldnt it?

Again, in a circuit race situation I think that could be more danger than its worth, mid way though a corner sitting on someones bumper with someone else right up your ass and suddenly the engine stops....Engine is cheaper than a whole car.

Cheers.

^ Much in the "muchness" i think ? :) ,red light comes on regardless of where you you are on track or if it kills ign.,when it shows you will need to do something to avoid the engine spitting the dummy and other drivers as well....all at the same time in a short time period...six of one..half dozen of the other.. :)

I suppose i could just let the motor tell me it's buggered by the knocking noise which is emitted !

the light may just be a signal to keep my ears open !.

But once you have your ear plugs in and helmet on and the motor noise it's really hard to hear OR draw your attention to an issue and this is where the light comes in.

It it's blinking OR stuttering then there is an issue. - which is what i am looking for at this stage.

thanks for the input , I will be tackling this next week parts wise.
