I own a Holden Statesman 5L Auto
I have come across a rattle in the last few weeks. I put my statesman on the hoist at work, left motor running and found a rattle between the Autotrans and motor. I didn't have time to remove the bottom housing cover as my HSV fitted exhaust is in the way so wouldn't be a quick and easy job to remove and check the flex plate.

So I got it home and I removed the Starter Motor and checked the Torque Converter bolts. They were all tight. As I was spinning the crank, I couldn't see the Flex Plate enough to see if it's cracked. It didn't look warped but again, I still couldn't see properly.

The noise happens first thing when I start the motor.
When I put it in drive, noise goes away but when I pick up revs, noise reoccurs.
When I am cruising, has slight rattle but it's not all the time.

So if it was a cracked plate, wouldn't it be noisy all the time?

What else could it be?

Note: I do require removing the trans as a welch plug is leaking coolant into the bellhousing area. But would rather know exactly what to look for before I order parts. I'm actually in the middle of deciding to buy a sh*tbox as a daily so I can remove trans first and then order parts. I don't want to order parts first and not need them.

Might not be the same but mine had similar symptoms once. While driving I thought I would give it some to see if it developed...it did
Pulled the flex plate apart around the bolt area Bolts were still in the broken bits of flex plate and one was snapped. Like I say I may not be related but mine had the same noise during running as you described and I didn't know what it was. Now I know.

Yes the flex plate usually cracks near or around the crank bolts.
